Χωρίς πρόοδο στο Κυπριακό ολοκληρώθηκε, σύμφωνα με το ΑΚΕΛ, η παρουσία του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας Νίκου Χριστοδουλίδη στη Νέα Υόρκη για τη Γενική Συνέλευση των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Σε ανακοίνωσή του, το ΑΚΕΛ αναφέρει ότι το ταξίδι και οι συναντήσεις του Προέδρου έληξαν «δυστυχώς, χωρίς πρόοδο για το Κυπριακό», παρά τις προσδοκίες που, όπως υποστηρίζει, είχαν καλλιεργηθεί προηγουμένως από τον ίδιο και στελέχη της κυβέρνησης. «Δεν έγινε κατορθωτή η διάρρηξη του αδιεξόδου» Το κόμμα σημειώνει ότι δεν προέκυψαν εξελίξεις που να επιτρέπουν τη διάρρηξη του αδιεξόδου και την επανέναρξη των διαπραγματεύσεων, παρά τις προσπάθειες που, όπως αναφέρει, κατέβαλε ο Γενικός Γραμματέας των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Παράλληλα, το ΑΚΕΛ επικρίνει την Άγκυρα, σημειώνοντας ότι η Τουρκία επανέλαβε τις θέσεις που εκφράζει μετά την κατάρρευση της διαδικασίας στο Κραν Μοντανά το 2017, τις οποίες χαρακτηρίζει «απαράδεκτες». Κατά το ΑΚΕΛ, κάτι τέτοιο «θα επέτρεπε να ακολουθηθεί μια αποτελεσματική και σύντομη διαδικασία συμπλήρωσης των εκκρεμούντων ζητημάτων και θα άνοιγε τον δρόμο σε συνολική διευθέτηση του Κυπριακού». Καταλήγοντας, το κόμμα επαναλαμβάνει ότι η λύση του Κυπριακού και η επανένωση του τόπου και του λαού παραμένουν αμετάθετος στόχος του.
Σοβαρό πρόβλημα παράνομων ρίψεων αποβλήτων και καύσης σκουπιδιών καταγγέλλουν κάτοικοι στην περιοχή του Αγίου Σιλά, με το ζήτημα να επανέρχεται στο προσκήνιο, καθώς η περιοχή βρίσκεται κοντά σε κατοικίες, το Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Λεμεσού και σχολικές εγκαταστάσεις. Για το θέμα πραγματοποιήθηκε παρέμβαση στην εκπομπή «Μεσημέρι και Κάτι» του ΣΙΓΜΑ, με τη συμμετοχή του Προέδρου της Επαρχιακής Επιτροπής Λεμεσού του Κινήματος Οικολόγων, Ανδρέα Μαυρίκιου, του Δημάρχου Πολεμιδιών, Ανδρέα Θεοδώρου, του Δημάρχου Κουρίου, Παντελή Ευτύχιου Γεωργίου, καθώς και της Αναπληρώτριας Διευθύντριας του Τμήματος Περιβάλλοντος, Έλενας Στυλιανοπούλου. Όπως ανέφερε, το Κίνημα Οικολόγων είχε ενημερωθεί για την κατάσταση από τον Ιούλιο του 2025 και έκτοτε απευθύνθηκε στους αρμόδιους Δήμους και στο Τμήμα Περιβάλλοντος. Σύμφωνα με τον ίδιο, κάτοικοι κάνουν λόγο για παράνομες ρίψεις αποβλήτων, αλλά και για καύση πλαστικών και σκουπιδιών κατά τις βραδινές ώρες, με αποτέλεσμα, όπως καταγγέλλουν, η ατμόσφαιρα στην περιοχή να γίνεται αποπνικτική. Ο Μαυρίκιος, παράλληλα, ζήτησε να δοθεί μόνιμη λύση στο πρόβλημα, επισημαίνοντας ότι η απλή περίφραξη της περιοχής ή η τοποθέτηση καμερών δεν αρκεί, αλλά θα πρέπει να εντοπίζονται και να τιμωρούνται όσοι προχωρούν στις παράνομες απορρίψεις και καύσεις. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά έγινε και στην επικείμενη λειτουργία της Τεχνικής Σχολής στην περιοχή, γεγονός που, όπως επισημάνθηκε, αυξάνει την ανάγκη για άμεση αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος. «Έχουμε ήδη προχωρήσει σε δικαστικές διαδικασίες» Ο Δήμαρχος Πολεμιδιών, Ανδρέας Θεοδώρου, ανέφερε ότι συγκεκριμένα τεμάχια στην περιοχή είναι τουρκοκυπριακής ιδιοκτησίας και ότι το θέμα είχε απασχολήσει σύσκεψη με το Τμήμα Περιβάλλοντος πριν από περίπου έναν χρόνο. Όπως είπε, το Τμήμα Περιβάλλοντος είχε προχωρήσει στην ανάκληση της άδειας του ιδιώτη που χρησιμοποιούσε συγκεκριμένα τεμάχια, ενώ παράλληλα έχουν κινηθεί και δικαστικές διαδικασίες. Ο Θεοδώρου ανέφερε ακόμη ότι έχει ενημερωθεί σχετικά και ο αρμόδιος Υπουργός και ότι έχει προγραμματιστεί σύσκεψη στις 6 Οκτωβρίου, με τη συμμετοχή όλων των εμπλεκόμενων φορέων, προκειμένου να εξεταστούν τα επόμενα βήματα. Σε ερώτηση για το ποιοι προχωρούν στις ρίψεις αποβλήτων, ο ίδιος ανέφερε ότι, σύμφωνα με τις πληροφορίες που έχει, το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της δραστηριότητας συνδέεται με άτομο που διαθέτει skips, ενώ υπάρχουν και αναφορές για άλλους που μεταφέρουν απόβλητα στην περιοχή κατά τις βραδινές ώρες. «Οι κάτοικοι υποφέρουν καθημερινά» Ο Δήμαρχος Κουρίου, Παντελής Ευτύχιου Γεωργίου, ανέφερε ότι το ζήτημα απασχολεί τις αρμόδιες αρχές εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια και ότι έχουν γίνει επανειλημμένες παρεμβάσεις προς το κεντρικό κράτος. Όπως είπε, παρά τις προσπάθειες, η κατάσταση εξακολουθεί να υφίσταται, ενώ έκανε λόγο για αδυναμία αποτελεσματικής επιβολής της νομοθεσίας. «Οι κάτοικοι μας υποφέρουν καθημερινά», ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά, σημειώνοντας ότι η περιοχή βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Λεμεσού και την οικιστική περιοχή του Ύψωνα και, ως εκ τούτου, επηρεάζονται χιλιάδες άνθρωποι. Ο ίδιος περιέγραψε νύχτες κατά τις οποίες η ατμόσφαιρα στην περιοχή γίνεται ιδιαίτερα αποπνικτική λόγω του καπνού, ενώ ζήτησε να προχωρήσουν οι απαραίτητες διαδικασίες ώστε να καταστεί δυνατή η αποκατάσταση της περιοχής. «Η άδεια του ιδιώτη ανακλήθηκε» Από την πλευρά του Τμήματος Περιβάλλοντος, η Αναπληρώτρια Διευθύντρια, Έλενα Στυλιανοπούλου, ανέφερε ότι το κράτος επιχειρεί να επιβάλει τη νομοθεσία και ότι έχει ήδη ληφθεί σειρά μέτρων. Όπως εξήγησε, στην περιοχή υπάρχει χώρος που χρησιμοποιείται παράνομα για εναπόθεση αποβλήτων, ιδιαίτερα αποβλήτων από κατασκευές και κατεδαφίσεις. Ως πρώτη ενέργεια, όπως είπε, ανακλήθηκε η άδεια του ιδιώτη που χρησιμοποιούσε τον χώρο, ενώ του ζητήθηκε παράλληλα να προχωρήσει στην αποκατάσταση της περιοχής. Παράλληλα, έχουν προχωρήσει και δικαστικές διαδικασίες. Η ίδια παραδέχθηκε, ωστόσο, ότι τα μέτρα που έχουν ληφθεί μέχρι σήμερα «δεν ήταν αρκετά» για την αντιμετώπιση μιας κατάστασης που χρονίζει και τόνισε ότι θα πρέπει να ληφθούν πιο ουσιαστικά μέτρα. Όπως ανέφερε, ένα μεγάλο μέρος της παράνομης παρέμβασης αφορά ιδιωτική γη, ενώ υπάρχει και τμήμα τουρκοκυπριακής γης, γεγονός που απαιτεί συντονισμό για την αντιμετώπιση του ζητήματος στο σύνολό του. «Ο στόχος είναι πραγματικά να σταματήσει η κατάσταση εκεί, αλλά ταυτόχρονα να γίνει και αποκατάσταση», σημείωσε, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι πρόκειται για μεγάλη έκταση και για ένα θέμα που πρέπει να αντιμετωπιστεί με σοβαρότητα. Στο επίκεντρο δημόσια υγεία και σχολεία Κατά τη διάρκεια της παρέμβασης τέθηκε ιδιαίτερα το ζήτημα των επιπτώσεων στους κατοίκους, αλλά και στους μαθητές που θα φοιτούν στην Τεχνική Σχολή, καθώς και στους ασθενείς και εργαζόμενους του Γενικού Νοσοκομείου. Σημείωσε ότι, πέρα από τις επιπτώσεις στην περιοχή και τη δημόσια υγεία, υπάρχει και το ζήτημα της ορθής διαχείρισης των αποβλήτων και της συμμόρφωσης με τη νομοθεσία. Την ίδια ώρα, ο Μαυρίκιος εξέφρασε την ελπίδα ότι η επικείμενη σύσκεψη στις 6 Οκτωβρίου θα οδηγήσει σε συγκεκριμένες αποφάσεις. Όπως ανέφερε, μετά και τις τοποθετήσεις των Δημάρχων και του Τμήματος Περιβάλλοντος, «είναι καιρός να βρεθεί μια μόνιμη λύση» στο πρόβλημα, το οποίο, όπως τόνισε, ταλαιπωρεί τους κατοίκους εδώ και χρόνια και σύντομα θα αφορά ακόμη περισσότερο κόσμο, λόγω της λειτουργίας της Τεχνικής Σχολής στην περιοχή.
