Ιωάννης Καστανάς, επισημαίνοντας τη σημασία της ενότητας στους κόλπους της Εκκλησίας. Ερωτηθείς για την απόφαση της Ιεράς Συνόδου της Εκκλησίας της Κύπρου να προχωρήσει με αλλαγή του Καταστατικού Χάρτη, ο κ. Καστανάς είπε ότι πρόκειται για νέα εξέλιξη. Στο πλαίσιο της πορείας της Εκκλησίας, και η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου, αλλά και οι άλλες κατά τόπους Εκκλησίες έχουν χρησιμοποιήσει διάφορους τρόπους εκλογής Αρχιερέων, ανέφερε, σημειώνοντας πως δεν υπάρχει ενιαίο σύστημα τρόπου εκλογής Αρχιερέων. «Στην Κύπρο υπήρχε η παράδοση για να διενεργείται η εκλογή Αρχιερέων με συμμετοχή του λαϊκού στοιχείου. Με το νέο Καταστατικό Χάρτη αυτό περιορίζεται στην εκλογή του Αρχιεπισκόπου, διότι έτσι έκρινε η Εκκλησία ότι εξυπηρετείται καλύτερα ο σκοπός της», πρόσθεσε. Σημείωσε ότι αυτό έγινε με ομοφωνία. Συνέχισε, λέγοντας πως το σημαντικότερο είναι «οι εκλογές να γίνονται με ενότητα και ει δυνατόν, εν Αγίω Πνεύματι. Δηλαδή μέσα στο πλαίσιο της διδασκαλίας της Εκκλησίας, ώστε να προάγεται και ο σκοπός της. Δεν είναι δηλαδή ζητήματα τόσο κρίσιμα αν εκλεγούν με τον έναν ή τον άλλο τρόπο». Κληθείς να σχολιάσει το γεγονός ότι έχει αποκλειστεί το λαϊκό στοιχείο από την εκλογή και αν είναι μια τακτική που είθισται σε άλλες Εκκλησίες, ο κ. Καστανάς είπε ότι η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου έχει αυτή την παράδοση που φθάνει στα βάθη των αιώνων, να εκλέγει η ίδια τους Αρχιεπισκόπους της και τους Αρχιερείς της και η συμμετοχή του λαϊκού στοιχείου έχει διατηρηθεί στην εκλογή του Προκαθημένου. Έφερε ακολούθως το παράδειγμα της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος, όπου δεν υπάρχει καθόλου συμμετοχή του λαϊκού στοιχείου, ενώ στο Πατριαρχείο Αλεξανδρείας, είπε ότι άλλαξε η πρακτική και πλέον ο Πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας και οι Αρχιερείς εκλέγονται μόνο από τη Σύνοδο. Στο Πατριαρχείο Ιεροσολύμων, επίσης, μόνο η Αγιοταφιτική Αδελφότητα εκλέγει, συνέχισε, ενώ στο πρώτο τη τάξει, Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο, οι Αρχιερείς εκλέγονται από την Αγία και Ιερά Σύνοδό του. «Στα νεότερα Πατριαρχεία με τον έναν ή τον άλλο τρόπο υπάρχει η συμμετοχή του λαϊκού στοιχείου», πρόσθεσε. Ερωτηθείς αν ορθώς έγινε αυτή η αλλαγή στο Καταστατικό, ο κ. Καστανάς είπε ότι «δεν πιστεύω ότι σε τέτοια ζητήματα μπορούμε να απαντήσουμε με ένα ορθώς ή λάθος, δηλαδή δεν είναι μία δικαιοδοτική κρίση ή μία δικαστική απόφαση, είναι μία επιλογή του σώματος της διοικούσας Εκκλησίας, σύμφωνα με την οποία εξυπηρετείται το συμφέρον της Εκκλησίας το δεδομένο χρόνο, με αυτό τον τρόπο». «Πιστεύω ότι πρέπει να περιμένουμε να λειτουργήσει για αρκετό καιρό προκειμένου να συγκρίνουμε τη νέα κατάσταση με τη παλαιά κατάσταση για να μπορέσουμε να απαντήσουμε ότι είναι ορθή» επιλογή, είπε, ενώ ανέφερε πως «σίγουρα δεν είναι κάτι πρωτόγνωρο και κάτι ξένο από την παράδοση της Εκκλησίας». «Σημειώνω και πάλι την ομοφωνία και το γεγονός ότι η ιδιαιτερότητα που ήταν η εκλογή του Αρχιεπισκόπου από το λαϊκό στοιχείο έχει παραμείνει. Όπως και η εκλογή της διοίκησης του βασικού κυττάρου, δηλαδή της ενορίας, όπου πάλι έχουμε συμμετοχή του λαϊκού στοιχείου», είπε. Όσον αφορά τις ακριβείς διατάξεις είπε ότι «περιμένουμε να δούμε το κείμενο του Καταστατικού Χάρτη, αλλά από τον τρόπο που εφαρμόστηκε την πρώτη φορά, είναι μία μίξη στοιχείων της παλαιάς διατάξεως, δηλαδή υποβολή υποψηφιοτήτων και εκλογή από το σώμα της Ιεραρχίας».
