Η διάνοιξη της διόδου Πυροΐου αποτελεί τον πρώτιστο στόχο του Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου Αθηένου, δήλωσε ο Δήμαρχος Κυριάκος Καρεκλάς στην εκδήλωση για τα 100 χρόνια από την ίδρυση του Δήμου, ενώ παράλληλα, αναφέρθηκε στις προσπάθειες για δημιουργία τμημάτων του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας και Γαλακτοκομικής Σχολής στην Αθηένου, καθώς και στις συνέπειες της τουρκικής εισβολής, με το 65% της έκτασης του Δήμου και περίπου το 80% της ιδιοκτησίας των κατοίκων να βρίσκεται μέχρι σήμερα υπό κατοχή. Στην εκδήλωση, που πραγματοποιήθηκε το βράδυ της Πέμπτης στην αμφιθεατρική αίθουσα «Νίκος Μουγιάρης», ομιλητές ήταν ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας Νίκος Χριστοδουλίδης, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου Γεώργιος, ο Δήμαρχος Αθηένου και ο ιστορικός, συγγραφέας, με καταγωγή από την Αθηένου, Γιάννης Κ. Λάμπρου. Ο Δήμαρχος Αθηένου στην ομιλία του χαρακτήρισε πρώτιστο στόχο του σημερινού Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου τη διάνοιξη της διόδου Πυροΐου, σημειώνοντας ότι θα προσδώσει μεγάλες προοπτικές ανάπτυξης στην περιοχή. Παράλληλα, όπως ανέφερε, γίνονται προσπάθειες για δημιουργία τμημάτων του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας στην Αθηένου, καθώς και για δημιουργία Γαλακτοκομικής Σχολής στο Γυμνάσιο της περιοχής. Σύμφωνα με τον Δήμαρχο, τα έργα αυτά θα φέρουν ανάπτυξη, θα προσελκύσουν φοιτητές και νέες δραστηριότητες στην περιοχή. Αναφερόμενος στην ιστορική πορεία της Αθηένου, είπε ότι από το 1960 μέχρι το 1974 η κωμόπολη κατέστη συγκοινωνιακός κόμβος μεταξύ Λευκωσίας, Λάρνακας και Αμμοχώστου και αναπτύχθηκε σε πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό. Σημείωσε ότι την περίοδο εκείνη σχεδιάστηκε και τοποθετήθηκε σύγχρονο υδρευτικό σύστημα, έγινε παροχή νερού σε όλα τα υποστατικά του Δήμου, ασφαλτοστρώθηκαν οι δρόμοι, τοποθετήθηκε οδικός φωτισμός και δημιουργήθηκε κτηνοτροφική περιοχή στον δρόμο προς Μελούσια. Όπως ανέφερε, η ανάπτυξη της Αθηένου στον πρωτογενή τομέα, τη γεωργία και την κτηνοτροφία, αλλά και στο εμπόριο και τη βιοτεχνία, ήταν την περίοδο αυτή αξιοθαύμαστη, ενώ τα παραδοσιακά αθηενίτικα προϊόντα έγιναν γνωστά σε ολόκληρη την Κύπρο και σε χώρες του εξωτερικού όπου ζουν απόδημοι Αθηενίτες. Ο Δήμαρχος αναφέρθηκε στις συνέπειες της τουρκικής εισβολής του 1974, λέγοντας ότι σταμάτησε την πρόοδο της Αθηένου και επέφερε «μίαν άνευ προηγουμένου τρομερή καταστροφή». Με την ολοκλήρωση της δεύτερης φάσης της εισβολής, είπε, καταλήφθηκε ένα τεράστιο τμήμα του Δήμου και μέχρι σήμερα βρίσκεται υπό κατοχή το 65% της έκτασής του και περίπου το 80% της ιδιοκτησίας των κατοίκων του. Ανέφερε ακόμη ότι ο Δήμος είναι σχεδόν περικυκλωμένος από τα τουρκικά στρατεύματα κατοχής, με μόνη διέξοδο προς νότο, ενώ η εύφορη καλλιεργήσιμη γη βρίσκεται υπό κατοχή και η γεωργία της Αθηένου καταστράφηκε. Η κτηνοτροφική περιοχή που είχε κατασκευαστεί στον δρόμο προς Μελούσια καταλήφθηκε, με αποτέλεσμα, όπως είπε, η κτηνοτροφία να υποστεί τεράστιο πλήγμα. Ο δρόμος Αθηένου-Λευκωσίας μέσω Πυροΐου παραμένει από τότε κλειστός, προκαλώντας, σύμφωνα με τον Δήμαρχο, τεράστια ταλαιπωρία και απομόνωση στους Αθηενίτες. Ο Δήμαρχος ευχαρίστησε δημόσια τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας Νίκο Χριστοδουλίδη για τη στάση του στις συνομιλίες με την άλλη πλευρά, αναφέροντας ότι δεν δέχεται τη διάνοιξη άλλου σημείου διέλευσης αν δεν ανοίξει μαζί και η δίοδος Πυροΐου. Εξέφρασε την ελπίδα και την ευχή να επιτευχθεί σύντομα η διάνοιξη της διόδου, σημειώνοντας ότι στην Αθηένου θα αποφέρει τεράστια οφέλη. Παρά τις συνέπειες της εισβολής, πρόσθεσε, οι Αθηενίτες συνέχισαν τη δραστηριότητά τους στον πρωτογενή τομέα, ενοικιάζοντας εκτάσεις γης σε όλα τα μέρη της Κύπρου προς καλλιέργεια και μεταφέροντας τα ζώα τους στον οικισμό και στη συνέχεια εκτός αυτού, στα νότια. Όπως ανέφερε, η Αθηένου συνεχίζει να παράγει σημαντικό μέρος της παγκύπριας παραγωγής σιτηρών και να κατέχει σχεδόν το μισό της παγκύπριας κτηνοτροφίας, με παράλληλη ανάπτυξη στη γεωργία, τη γαλακτοβιομηχανία, την αρτοποιία και το εμπόριο. Αναφέρθηκε επίσης στα αθηενίτικα προϊόντα, μεταξύ άλλων το ψωμί, το λοκούμι του γάμου, τα γλυκά του κουταλιού και το αθηενίτικο κέντημα βενίς, τα οποία, όπως είπε, γίνονται πασίγνωστα εντός και εκτός Κύπρου. Ο Δήμαρχος σημείωσε ακόμη ότι ο Δήμος Αθηένου είναι ο φορέας που ενέγραψε τα πιο πολλά στοιχεία άυλης πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς στον Εθνικό Κατάλογο της ΟΥΝΕΣΚΟ από οποιονδήποτε άλλο φορέα στην Κύπρο. Αναφερόμενος στη μεταρρύθμιση της Τοπικής Αυτοδιοίκησης, είπε ότι από την 1η Ιουλίου 2024 η Αθηένου συνενώθηκε με το Αβδελλερό και ο νέος Δήμος Αθηένου αποτελείται από τα δύο Δημοτικά Διαμερίσματα, Αθηένου και Αβδελλερού. Όπως ανέφερε, με κοινή πλέον πορεία Αθηένου και Αβδελλερό βαδίζουν μαζί στην πρόοδο και την ανάπτυξη, για το καλό των κατοίκων και των δύο περιοχών. Στα έργα που βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη αναφέρθηκε στην Κεντρική Πλατεία Εκκλησιών, η οποία, όπως είπε, άρχισε να κατασκευάζεται πριν από εννέα μήνες και βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη. Παρά τα προβλήματα και τις καθυστερήσεις που παρουσιάζονται, πρόσθεσε, το έργο θα ολοκληρωθεί το επόμενο διάστημα και θα καταστήσει το κέντρο της Αθηένου ελκυστικό. Καταλήγοντας, ανέφερε ότι το όραμα του σημερινού Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου είναι η μεταρρυθμισμένη Αθηένου, που περιλαμβάνει την Αθηένου και το Αβδελλερό, να καταστεί ένας εύρωστος Δήμος, με έργα και πολιτικές που θα ενισχύσουν την ποιότητα ζωής. «Επίκεντρο της προσπάθειάς μας θα είναι πάντοτε ο δημότης, η επίλυση των προβλημάτων του και η καλυτέρευση της ποιότητας ζωής του», ανέφερε. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου Γεώργιος ανέφερε ότι κάθε επέτειος της Ιστορίας, όπως και τα 100 χρόνια από την ίδρυση του Δημαρχείου Αθηένου, κρύβει την παγίδα του περιορισμού σε μια απλή ανάμνηση των γεγονότων, αντί να οδηγεί σε έναν πολύπλευρο και δυναμικό αναστοχασμό. Όπως είπε, μια επέτειος αποκτά αξία όταν ανανοηματοδοτείται στο παρόν, ώστε να μετατραπεί σε προωθητική δύναμη για το μέλλον. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος σημείωσε ότι η Αθηένου οφείλει να αξιοποιήσει τα επιτεύγματα της εκατονταετίας που πέρασε και, προσαρμοζόμενη στις απαιτήσεις των καιρών, να συνεχίσει και να επεκτείνει την προοδευτική πορεία της. «Κυρίως, όμως», ανέφερε, «να εργαστούμε για αποφυγή της τουρκοποίησης και της Αθηένου και όλης της πατρίδας μας, όπως φαίνεται, ξεκάθαρα πια, να είναι ο τελικός στόχος των Τούρκων». Αναφερόμενος στα γεγονότα του Αυγούστου του 1974, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος είπε ότι στη μνήμη όσων έζησαν τα γεγονότα επανέρχεται συχνά, ως εφιάλτης, η περίοδος κατά την οποία και η Αθηένου κινδύνεψε να πέσει στα χέρια των Τούρκων. Όπως ανέφερε, όταν αναλογίζονται εκείνες τις μέρες, κατανοούν το δράμα των προσφύγων, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι ο μεγαλύτερος καημός τους δεν είναι το χάσιμο περιουσιών ή δυνατοτήτων οποιασδήποτε μορφής ανέλιξης, αλλά η στέρηση του χωριού τους. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος ανέφερε ότι οι Αθηενίτες έχουν, ευτυχώς, τη δυνατότητα επιστροφής στην κοινότητα καταγωγής τους, έστω και ελλιπή, σημειώνοντας ότι η γη και οι περιουσίες τους είναι στην πλειονότητά τους απροσπέλαστες. Ο κ. Γεώργιος συνεχάρη τον Δήμαρχο και το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο για την επέτειο, ευχαρίστησε τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας για την παρουσία του και ευχήθηκε σε όλους τους Αθηενίτες κάθε πρόοδο και ευλογία από τον Θεό. Ο Γιάννης Κ. Λάμπρου έκανε ιστορική αναδρομή στην ίδρυση του Δήμου, σημειώνοντας ότι τα διαβήματα των Αθηαινιτών για την ίδρυση Δημαρχείου, άρχισαν το 1922. Στις 29 Ιανουαρίου 1925 η Αθηένου ανακηρύχθηκε Δήμος και στις 6 Απριλίου 1926 πραγματοποιήθηκε η πρώτη συνεδρία του Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου, ημερομηνία που, όπως ανέφερε, μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ως η «γενέθλια μέρα» του Δημαρχείου. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά έκανε στην υπαγωγή της Αθηένου στην επαρχία Λάρνακας το 1927, από την επαρχία Λευκωσίας, εξέλιξη που συνδέθηκε με την προσπάθεια κατασκευής και ασφαλτόστρωσης δρόμου που θα συνέδεε τη Λευκωσία με τη Λάρνακα μέσω Πυροΐου, Αθηένου, Αβδελλερού και Αραδίππου. Το 1935, 303 Αθηαινίτες ζήτησαν την κατάργηση του Δημαρχείου, επικαλούμενοι ανεπαρκή έσοδα και περιορισμένη προσφορά στην κοινότητα. Το αίτημα έγινε αποδεκτό και το Δημαρχείο καταργήθηκε την 1η Απριλίου 1935. Ο ιστορικός σημείωσε ότι πρόκειται για τη μοναδική περίπτωση δημαρχούμενης κοινότητας στην Κύπρο, οι κάτοικοι της οποίας ζήτησαν την κατάργηση του Δημαρχείου τους. Οι Αθηαινίτες, ωστόσο, όπως ανέφερε, μετάνιωσαν για την κατάργηση και από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1940 άρχισαν οι προσπάθειες για επανασύσταση του Δημαρχείου. Το 1942, 523 κάτοικοι υπέβαλαν σχετική αίτηση, ενώ οι πιέσεις συνεχίστηκαν και το 1947 κορυφώθηκαν με συλλαλητήριο στην Αθηένου. Τελικά, ο Κυβερνήτης συναίνεσε στην επαναλειτουργία του Δημαρχείου και οι εκλογές πραγματοποιήθηκαν στις 23 Μαΐου 1948. Σύμφωνα με τον ιστορικό, τα έργα που έγιναν μετά, μαζί με την ηλεκτροδότηση των δρόμων και των κατοικιών, ανέβασαν την Αθηένου από το επίπεδο του χωριού στο επίπεδο της πόλης. Κλείνοντας, χαρακτήρισε το Δημαρχείο «ευλογία για την Αθηένου», υπογραμμίζοντας τη συμβολή του στην άνοδο του βιοτικού επιπέδου και της ποιότητας ζωής των δημοτών, καθώς και την προσφορά του μετά την τουρκική εισβολή και την κατοχή μεγάλου τμήματος της πατρίδας μας. DBRS Ratings GmbH (Morningstar DBRS) has changed the trend on both the Republic of Cyprus’ long-term and short-term foreign and local currency issuer ratings to ‘positive’ from ‘stable’ on the view that Cyprus will maintain its strong fiscal position and continue reducing its public debt burden. Morningstar DBRS also confirmed the long-term credit ratings at “A” and the short-term ratings at R-1 (low). The rating agency said favourable economic growth prospects and sizable structural fiscal surpluses help reduce the general government debt-to-GDP ratio from an expected 49.9% this year to below 40% by 2029.
