Economic sentiment in Cyprus improved for the third consecutive month, rising marginally in June, on improved business and consumer confidence, according to the benchmark index compiled by the Economics Research Centre of the University of Cyprus. The June Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI-CypERC) increased by 0.2 points to 100.8 points compared with 100.6 in May, driven by stronger business confidence in the retail trade and construction sectors, alongside further gains in consumer confidence. Μια πυρκαγιά έκτασης άνω των 13.000 στρεμμάτων που μαίνεται στη νότια Γαλλία, άλλες δύο υπό έλεγχο στην Ισπανία και την Πορτογαλία: μια πρώιμη περίοδος πυρκαγιών ξεκίνησε στη νότια Ευρώπη, ευνοημένη από την ξηρασία και ένα νέο κύμα ζέστης. Στη Γαλλία, στον νομό των Ανατολικών Πυρηναίων (νότια), περίπου 13.500 στρέμματα γης έχουν ήδη καεί από τη φωτιά, που εκδηλώθηκε χθες το βράδυ κοντά σε μια δύσβατη ορεινή περιοχή, πλησίον του Όρους Κανιγκού. «Οι συνθήκες γίνονται ολοένα και δυσκολότερες εξαιτίας του βορειοδυτικού ανέμου, που ενισχύεται και της έντονης ζέστης που επικρατεί. Η φωτιά εντείνεται, πρέπει να συνεχίσουμε τη μάχη», δήλωσε ο Στεφάν Κλερκ, αναπληρωτής διοικητής των πυροσβεστικών δυνάμεων του νομού. «Αρχίσαμε να βλέπουμε τον καπνό γύρω στις 22.30 τοπική ώρα, κατόπιν εξαπλωνόταν ολοένα και περισσότερο. Κάποιος από τη δημοτική αρχή μας χτύπησε την πόρτα γύρω στη 01.00 το πρωί για να μας πει να φύγουμε. Υπήρχαν παντού πυροσβεστικά οχήματα, η οσμή του καμένου μας κατέκλυσε», περιέγραψε η Σαρλότ Πινιόλ, ηλικίας 30 ετών, η οποία αναγκάστηκε να εκκενώσει την οικία της στο Ιλ σιρ Τετ. Μαζί με τη μητέρα της, τον γιο της και τα τρία σκυλιά τους, εγκαταστάθηκε σε ένα γήπεδο, όπου οδηγήθηκαν όσοι απομακρύνθηκαν από τα σπίτια τους κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας. Και άλλα πύρινα μέτωπα εκδηλώθηκαν στη νότια Γαλλία νωρίτερα αυτήν την εβδομάδα, με τον υπουργό Εσωτερικών, Λοράν Νουνιέζ, να διατυπώνει την «ανησυχία» του μπροστά σε μια περίοδο πυρκαγιών που ξεκίνησε «έναν μήνα νωρίτερα». Οι περισσότερες πυρκαγιές οφείλονται σε ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα, σύμφωνα με τους πυροσβέστες, ωστόσο η εξέλιξή τους ευνοήθηκε από τις υψηλές θερμοκρασίες και την ξηρασία. Στην άλλη πλευρά των συνόρων, μια φωτιά που ξεκίνησε στην Ισπανία, κοντά στο τουριστικό θέρετρο Κόστα Μπράβα, έκαψε ήδη 22.000 στρέμματα γης. «Οριοθετήθηκε» σήμερα, σύμφωνα με τους πυροσβέστες. Εντούτοις, όπως ανέφεραν οι πυροσβεστικές δυνάμεις σε ένα δελτίο Τύπου, αναμένεται μια «περίπλοκη ημέρα λόγω των υψηλών θερμοκρασιών και των πολυάριθμων εστιών καπνού». Το μεσημέρι, οι αρχές ήραν την απαγόρευση κυκλοφορίας που είχαν επιβάλει σε περίπου 10 κοινότητες γύρω από το Λα Μπισμπάλ ντ’ Εμπορντά, κοντά στη Ζιρόνα, σε απόσταση περίπου 20 χλμ από τις ακτές της Μεσογείου, επιτρέποντας στους κατοίκους να επιστρέψουν στα σπίτια τους. Η πυρκαγιά οφείλεται πιθανόν σε «αμέλεια» και ένας άνθρωπος τέθηκε υπό κράτηση. Στη βόρεια Πορτογαλία, μια σημαντική δασική πυρκαγιά καίει εδώ και τρεις ημέρες στη Βουζέλα, στο Βιζέου. Έχει καταστρέψει τουλάχιστον 130.000 στρέμματα βλάστησης, όμως «η κατάσταση εξελίσσεται ευνοϊκά» σήμερα, σύμφωνα με τις αρχές που εκτιμούν πως περίπου το 80% της φωτιάς έχει τεθεί υπό έλεγχο. Η διατήρηση της ιστορικής μνήμης, η δικαίωση των θυμάτων της τουρκικής εισβολής και η αταλάντευτη συνέχιση του αγώνα για απελευθέρωση και επανένωση της Κύπρου βρέθηκαν στο επίκεντρο του επιμνημόσυνου λόγου του Υπουργού Άμυνας, Βασίλη Πάλμα. Στο ετήσιο μνημόσυνο των φονευθέντων και αγνοουμένων της Κώμης Κεπήρ, το οποίο τελέστηκε στον Ιερό Ναό Αγίων Αυξεντίου και Ευσταθίου, Λάρνακα, ο ΥΠΑΜ απέτισε φόρο τιμής στους ήρωες, τονίζοντας ότι η θυσία τους αποτελεί διαχρονική παρακαταθήκη ευθύνης, ενότητας και εθνικής συνέχειας. Η κοινότητα Κώμη Κεπήρ όπως και τόσες άλλες κοινότητες της Κύπρου, έχει συνδέσει άρρηκτα την ιστορική της πορεία με τις πιο καθοριστικές στιγμές της ιστορίας του τόπου μας, αλλά και με τη διαρκή προσήλωση των Ελλήνων της Κύπρου στους αγώνες για ελευθερία και αξιοπρέπεια, είπε ο κ. Πάλμας. «Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο οι θυσίες των ανθρώπων που μνημονεύουμε σήμερα δεν μπορούν να ιδωθούν ανεξάρτητα από τη μακρά ιστορική διαδρομή του κυπριακού ελληνισμού», σημείωσε, κάνοντας αναφορά από τα πρώτα χρόνια της περιόδου της αγγλοκρατίας, στον αγώνα της ΕΟΚΑ, μέχρι την τουρκική εισβολή. «Μεταξύ των τριών αδικοχαμένων κατοίκων της κοινότητας κατά την περίοδο του εθνικοαπελευθερωτικού Αγώνα, ή και μεταγενέστερα λόγω των συνθηκών της εποχής, συγκαταλέγεται και ο αγωνιστής Γιαννάκης Στεφανίδης, η δολοφονία του οποίου αποτελεί μια από τις μελανές σελίδες της τετραετίας 1955 – 59», είπε. Ανέφερε στη συνέχεια ότι τα πρώτα χρόνια μετά την εγκαθίδρυση της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας σημαδεύτηκαν από σοβαρές διακοινοτικές εντάσεις, οι οποίες κλόνισαν από πολύ νωρίς τη σταθερότητα και τη συνοχή του νεοσύστατου κράτους. Τα γεγονότα του Δεκεμβρίου του 1963, σημείωσε, αποτέλεσαν την απαρχή μιας μακράς περιόδου έντονης πολιτικής αστάθειας, με βαθιές συνέπειες στις σχέσεις μεταξύ των δύο κοινοτήτων, αναφερόμενος και στα γεγονότα της Τηλλυρίας που «αποτέλεσαν την πρώτη απόπειρα στρατιωτικής εισβολής της Τουρκίας στην Κύπρο, με στόχο την κατάλυση της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας», για να σημειώσει ότι «οι εξελίξεις αυτές υπήρξαν το προοίμιο των ακόμη τραγικότερων γεγονότων που κορυφώθηκαν την επόμενη δεκαετία». Ο κ. Πάλμας χαρακτήρισε την τουρκική εισβολή του 1974, η οποία ακολούθησε λίγες ημέρες μετά το πραξικόπημα της 15ης Ιουλίου, ως «το πλέον δραματικό ορόσημο της σύγχρονης κυπριακής ιστορίας», με τις επιπτώσεις να είναι «εκτεταμένες και ιδιαιτέρως οδυνηρές για την πατρίδα μας». Ο ΥΠΑΜ αναφέρθηκε στους νεκρούς και αγνοούμενους της εισβολής και τους εκτοπισμένους. «Ο απολογισμός για την κοινότητα Κώμης Κεπήρ παραμένει. Συνολικά 15 δολοφονηθέντες και αγνοούμενοι», σημειώσει για να τονίσει ότι «μέσα από το βαρύ αυτό ιστορικό τίμημα αναδεικνύεται με ιδιαίτερη ένταση η σημασία της πατρίδας ως ύψιστης αξίας για κάθε άνθρωπο». Σήμερα, είπε στη συνέχεια ο κ. Πάλμας, «μνημονεύοντας τους φονευθέντες κατοίκους της κοινότητας Κώμης Κεπήρ, μας δίδεται η ευκαιρία να αναλογιστούμε και τις δικές μας ευθύνες έναντι της ιστορίας μας. Καθίσταται ξεκάθαρο ότι δεν πρέπει ποτέ να εγκαταλείψουμε τον αγώνα για τη διεκδίκηση των αναφαίρετων δικαιωμάτων μας». Οφείλουμε, τόνισε, με ενότητα και ομοψυχία να συνεχίσουμε να εργαζόμαστε για την επίτευξη μιας βιώσιμης λύσης στο εθνικό μας ζήτημα. «Μιας λύσης που θα οδηγεί στην απελευθέρωση και επανένωση της πατρίδας μας, θα ενισχύει την αρμονική λειτουργία του κράτους και θα εγγυάται την ευημερία και την πρόοδο όλων των πολιτών, εξασφαλίζοντας έτσι ένα μέλλον ειρήνης και ασφάλειας για τον λαό μας και τις επόμενες γενιές», είπε.
