Ο πρώην μεγαλοπαραγωγός του Χόλιγουντ Χάρβεϊ Γουάινστιν καταδικάστηκε σήμερα στη Νέα Υόρκη σε κάθειρξη 15 ετών για σεξουαλική επίθεση σε βάρος μιας πρώην βοηθού παραγωγής, μια υπόθεση που εκκρεμούσε στα δικαστήρια επί οκτώ χρόνια. Οι εισαγγελικές αρχές του Μανχάταν είχαν ανακοινώσει τον Ιούνιο ότι θα ζητούσαν την επιβολή 20ετούς κάθειρξης για τις κατηγορίες που βάρυναν τον Γουάινστιν. Η μέγιστη ποινή που θα μπορούσε να του επιβληθεί ήταν κάθειρξη 25 ετών. Τον Ιούνιο του 2025 κρίθηκε και πάλι ένοχος για τη σεξουαλική επίθεση στη Χάλεϊ. «Δεν είμαι βίαιος άνθρωπος, δείξτε λίγο έλεος» παρακάλεσε ο πρώην παραγωγός, ο οποίος λόγω προβλημάτων υγείας χρησιμοποιεί αναπηρικό αμαξίδιο για να μετακινείται, απευθυνόμενος στον δικαστή Κέρτις Φάρμπερ. Τον ρόλο της Κύπρου ως μικρού κράτους που επιδιώκει να λειτουργεί ως γέφυρα συνεργασίας στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, αλλά και την ανάγκη συνεπούς εφαρμογής του διεθνούς δικαίου, ανέδειξε ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας Νίκος Χριστοδουλίδης από το βήμα της 81ης Γενικής Συνέλευσης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Στην ομιλία του αναφέρθηκε, μεταξύ άλλων, στον Θαλάσσιο Ανθρωπιστικό Διάδρομο προς τη Γάζα, στον ρόλο της Κύπρου ως ασφαλούς κόμβου εκκενώσεων σε περιόδους κρίσεων, στην ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια μέσω του CyprusAid, στην κλιματική κρίση και στις περιφερειακές συνεργασίες. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά έκανε στο Κυπριακό, καταγγέλλοντας τη συνεχιζόμενη τουρκική κατοχή και απευθυνόμενος προσωπικά στον Τούρκο Πρόεδρο Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν. Επανέλαβε ότι η Διζωνική Δικοινοτική Ομοσπονδία με πολιτική ισότητα παραμένει η μοναδική βάση λύσης και δήλωσε έτοιμος για επανέναρξη των διαπραγματεύσεων από το σημείο όπου διακόπηκαν το 2017. Αυτούσια η ομιλία: Η «ελπίδα» του ΟΗΕ δοκιμάζεται Όπως μας είχε υπενθυμίσει ο Γενικός Γραμματέας του ΟΗΕ πριν από μερικά χρόνια, «Τα Ηνωμένα Έθνη είναι το παράγωγο της ΕΛΠΙΔΑΣ». Ογδόντα ένα χρόνια μετά τη γέννησή της, αυτή η ΕΛΠΙΔΑ δοκιμάζεται. Η τεχνολογία, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της Τεχνητής Νοημοσύνης, εξελίσσεται με πρωτοφανή ταχύτητα. Η κλιματική αλλαγή αναδιαμορφώνει τις κοινωνίες μας. Το διεθνές περιβάλλον γίνεται όλο και πιο περίπλοκο, πιο αμφισβητούμενο και πιο απρόβλεπτο. Η διεθνής τάξη δεν αλλάζει απλά. Δοκιμάζεται κατά τρόπο άνευ προηγουμένου. Αλλά είναι σε τέτοιες εποχές αβεβαιότητας που οι θεμελιώδεις αξίες της πολυμέρειας πρέπει να προστατευθούν: Το Διεθνές Δίκαιο. Ο Χάρτης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Ο σεβασμός της κυριαρχίας και της εδαφικής ακεραιότητας. Η ειρηνική επίλυση των διαφορών. Ο σεβασμός των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων. Η ισότητα των κρατών. Όλα αυτά δεν αποτελούν αρχές του Παρελθόντος. Είναι διαχρονικές αρχές. Απαραίτητο συστατικό για το Παρόν και το Μέλλον. Η πρόκληση ενώπιόν μας είναι επομένως σαφής: καθώς ο κόσμος αλλάζει, οι θεσμοί μας πρέπει να είναι σε θέση να ανταποκρίνονται στις νέες πραγματικότητες και απειλές. Και να συνεχίσουν να καθοδηγούνται από τα οδυνηρά μαθήματα της ιστορίας ΚΑΙ το όραμα των ιδρυτών αυτού του Οργανισμού. Αυτή είναι η ουσία της θεματικής της 81ης Γενικής Συνέλευσης: «Αποκατάσταση της εμπιστοσύνης, διαχείριση της αλλαγής: ένας Οργανισμός Ηνωμένων Εθνών που παράγει αποτελέσματα για όλους». Κυρίες και κύριοι, Ο Χάρτης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών ως πυξίδα Η αλλαγή είναι αναπόφευκτη. Αυτό που πρέπει να παραμείνει σταθερό είναι ο Χάρτης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών ως πυξίδα μας. Μας καθοδηγεί όλους. Ανεξάρτητα από τη δύναμη, το μέγεθος και την επιρροή. Για τις μικρές σε μέγεθος χώρες, η αρχή της ισότητας των κρατών είναι θεμελιώδης. Και αυτή έχει διαμορφώσει την εμπιστοσύνη που μας συνδέει. Βασιζόμαστε σε ένα διεθνές σύστημα στο οποίο γίνονται σεβαστά η κυριαρχία και η εδαφική ακεραιότητα. Αναμένουμε τη συνεπή εφαρμογή του διεθνούς δικαίου, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της Σύμβασης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών για το Δίκαιο της Θάλασσας. Πιστεύουμε στην ειρηνική επίλυση των διαφορών. ΚΑΙ απαιτούμε την προστασία των δικαιωμάτων κάθε κράτους. Αυτά αποτελούν τα αναπόσπαστα στοιχεία της συλλογικής μας εμπιστοσύνης. Και αυτός είναι ο κώδικας αρχών που διέπει τη διπλωματική δράση της Κύπρου. Και σε αυτόν τον ραγδαία μεταβαλλόμενο κόσμο, τα μικρά και μεσαία μεγέθους κράτη πρέπει να αναζητήσουν συνέργειες, συνεχίζοντας παράλληλα να επιδιώκουν στρατηγική αυτονομία. Η μεταρρύθμιση του ΟΗΕ Η διατήρηση της εμπιστοσύνης απαιτεί επίσης θεσμούς, ικανούς να ανταποκριθούν στον κόσμο του σήμερα: τα Ηνωμένα Έθνη πρέπει, συνεπώς, να συνεχίσουν να εξελίσσονται. Η Πρωτοβουλία UN80 αποτελεί σημαντικό μέρος αυτής της προσπάθειας. Το Σύμφωνο για το Μέλλον, καθώς και η Ατζέντα 2030 και οι Στόχοι Βιώσιμης Ανάπτυξης, αποτελούν επίσης μέρος της προσπάθειας να διασφαλιστεί ότι η πολυμερής συνεργασία μπορεί να ανταποκριθεί στις ανάγκες της εποχής μας. Αυτή η στιγμή της μεταρρύθμισης συμπίπτει επίσης με την ολοκλήρωση μιας δεκαετίας στο πηδάλιο αυτού του Οργανισμού από τον Γενικό Γραμματέα Αντόνιο Γκουτέρες. Η Κύπρος εξάρει την ηγεσία του κατά τη διάρκεια μιας περιόδου πρωτοφανών παγκόσμιων εξελίξεων, την ακλόνητη δέσμευσή του στην πολυμέρεια ΚΑΙ τις προσπάθειές του για την ενίσχυση και τη μεταρρύθμιση του ΟΗΕ. Ωστόσο, η μεταρρύθμιση των δομών μας αποτελεί μόνο μέρος της απάντησης. Αυτό που απαιτείται επίσης είναι η ειλικρινής προθυμία των κρατών μελών να συμβάλουν και να προστατεύσουν το πολυμερές σύστημα. Άλλωστε, τα κράτη διαθέτουν διαφορετικές δυνατότητες, εμπειρίες και προοπτικές. Οι μεγάλες δυνάμεις έχουν εκτόπισμα. Τα μικρότερα κράτη πρέπει να διαθέτουν πειθώ. Δεν μπορούμε να εξαναγκάσουμε. Μπορούμε όμως να ενώσουμε δυνάμεις. Δεν μπορούμε να επιβάλουμε τα αποτελέσματα. Μαζί όμως, μπορούμε να βοηθήσουμε στη διαμόρφωσή τους. Δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία ότι οι σημερινές προκλήσεις απαιτούν συνεργασία και εταιρικές σχέσεις που βασίζονται στη γνώση των περιφερειών και των πραγματικοτήτων τους. Η Κύπρος ως περιφερειακός κόμβος Η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία επιδιώκει με συνέπεια να πράξει ακριβώς αυτό. Και έχει αναπτύξει τις απαραίτητες δυνατότητες που απαιτούνται για να το πράξει. Η γεωγραφική μας θέση, στο σταυροδρόμι της Ευρώπης, της Ασίας και της Αφρικής, μάς τοποθετεί κοντά σε μερικές από τις πιο σύνθετες δυναμικές του κόσμου. Ταυτόχρονα μας παρέχει την ευκαιρία να συμβάλουμε ενεργά στην αντιμετώπισή τους. Ο Θαλάσσιος Ανθρωπιστικός Διάδρομος προς τη Γάζα Μετά την τρομοκρατική επίθεση της Χαμάς στις 7 Οκτωβρίου 2023 και την καταστροφική ανθρωπιστική κατάσταση στη Γάζα, η Κύπρος, εκτός από το ότι έχει διαθέσει περισσότερο από το 25% του διαθέσιμου για ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια προϋπολογισμού στην Παλαιστίνη, έχει θέσει σε εφαρμογή τον Θαλάσσιο Ανθρωπιστικό Διάδρομο. Η Κύπρος μπορούσε να προσφέρει κάτι συγκεκριμένο: τη γεωγραφική της θέση, τις υποδομές της, τις άριστες σχέσεις της με όλες τις χώρες της περιοχής και τη βούληση να συνεργαστεί με διεθνείς εταίρους. Μέσω της συνεργασίας, μεταξύ άλλων, με τον Μηχανισμό 2720 του ΟΗΕ, η ιδέα αυτή έγινε πρόταση και εξελίχθηκε σε λειτουργική ανθρωπιστική διαδρομή. Μια διαδρομή που συνεχίζει να αποφέρει αποτελέσματα ακόμη και αυτή τη στιγμή. «Ασφαλές καταφύγιο» για εκκενώσεις Η Κύπρος έχει ΕΠΙΣΗΣ διαδραματίσει εποικοδομητικό ρόλο σε περιόδους έκτακτης ανάγκης. Όταν υπήρχε ανάγκη εκκένωσης υπηκόων τρίτων χωρών από τη γειτονιά μας, η χώρα μου λειτούργησε επανειλημμένως ως «ασφαλές καταφύγιο». Οι υποδομές και οι πόροι μας έχουν αξιοποιηθεί προς διευκόλυνση ανθρώπων που βρίσκονται σε κίνδυνο, προκειμένου να διευκολυνθεί η ασφαλής διέλευσή τους. Μόνο τα τελευταία τρία χρόνια, βοηθήσαμε στην εκκένωση χιλιάδων πολιτών από 70 διαφορετικές χώρες. Ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια μέσω CyprusAid ΚΑΙ μέσω του CyprusAid, έχουμε παράσχει ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια σε χώρες που αντιμετωπίζουν φυσικές καταστροφές. Η Κύπρος ήταν μεταξύ των πρώτων που ανταποκρίθηκαν μετά τον καταστροφικό σεισμό στη Βενεζουέλα και τις αιφνίδιες πλημμύρες στο Νεπάλ. Η αντιμετώπιση της καταστροφικής ανθρωπιστικής κατάστασης στο Σουδάν, καθώς και στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Σαχέλ, αποτέλεσαν επίσης προτεραιότητα για τη χώρα μου, με ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό των διαθέσιμων πόρων μας να κατευθύνεται προς την περιοχή. Κυρίες και κύριοι, Κλιματική κρίση και περιφερειακή συνεργασία Η άνοδος της θερμοκρασίας, η λειψυδρία και τα ακραία καιρικά φαινόμενα μάς επηρεάζουν όλους. Υπερβαίνοντας σύνορα και πολιτική. Στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή, οι αλληλένδετες πολιτικές πραγματικότητες που αντιμετωπίζουμε εντείνονται περαιτέρω λόγω της κλιματικής κρίσης. Η συνεργασία, επομένως, είναι η μόνη απάντηση. Αυτός είναι ο σκοπός της Περιφερειακής Πρωτοβουλίας της Κύπρου για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή: να φέρει κοντά τις χώρες της περιοχής μας, ενισχύοντας έτσι τη συλλογική μας δυνατότητα προσαρμογής, μετριασμού και ανθεκτικότητας. Αντανακλώντας την έμφαση στην περιφερειακή ανάληψη ευθύνης, συνενώνει εταίρους από τη Μέση Ανατολή, τη Βόρεια Αφρική και τον Κόλπο. Η θέση μας είναι σαφής: Σε μια εποχή πολλαπλών κρίσεων, η απομόνωση είναι το αντίθετο της υπευθυνότητας και μια πολυτέλεια που δεν μπορούμε να έχουμε. Η Κύπρος απέδειξε ότι είναι ένας ενεργός και υπεύθυνος παράγοντας στη διεθνή κοινότητα. Έχει συνεισφέρει στη διαχείριση κρίσεων, στην ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια, στις περιφερειακές συνέργειες, στην προστασία των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων και της πολυμέρειας. Πενήντα δύο χρόνια έχουν περάσει από την παράνομη τουρκική εισβολή στην Κύπρο. Μια πράξη επιθετικότητας, που παραβιάζει τις θεμελιώδεις αρχές του Χάρτη του ΟΗΕ. Μια συνεχιζόμενη, κατάφωρη παραβίαση του διεθνούς δικαίου, με περισσότερο από το ένα τρίτο του εδάφους της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας να παραμένει υπό τουρκική κατοχή. Εδώ και 52 χρόνια, δεκάδες χιλιάδες εκτοπισμένοι και οι απόγονοί τους εμποδίζονται από το να επιστρέψουν στα σπίτια τους. Εδώ και 52 χρόνια, τα Βαρώσια παραμένουν περίκλειστα, με την Τουρκία να αψηφά ακόμη τις σαφείς και συγκεκριμένες υποχρεώσεις της που ορίζονται στα σχετικά ψηφίσματα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ. Εδώ και 52 χρόνια, βιώνουμε παραβιάσεις θεμελιωδών ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων· την καταστροφή της θρησκευτικής και πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς· ΚΑΙ την οργανωμένη μεταφορά εποίκων που συνιστά δημογραφική αλλοίωση. Ο πόνος και η τεράστια οδύνη αποτελούν την καθημερινή πραγματικότητα των συγγενών των αγνοουμένων, οι οποίοι μέχρι και σήμερα απαιτούν απαντήσεις σχετικά με την τύχη των αγαπημένων τους προσώπων. ΚΑΙ εδώ και 52 χρόνια, οι αρχές που διακυβεύονται παραμένουν οι ίδιες. Ο σεβασμός της κυριαρχίας και της εδαφικής ακεραιότητας δεν είναι ρητορικά σχήματα. Ούτε πρέπει να εφαρμόζονται επιλεκτικά, ανάλογα με το ποιος είναι ο δράστης. Αυτές οι αρχές δεν καθίστανται λιγότερο σημαντικές με το πέρασμα του χρόνου. Ούτε και τα Ψηφίσματα αυτού του Οργανισμού. Τα Ψηφίσματα του ΟΗΕ δεν μπορούν να εφαρμόζονται σε μια περίπτωση και να αγνοούνται σε μια άλλη. Και η κυριαρχία και η εδαφική ακεραιότητα ενός κράτους δεν μπορούν να εξαρτώνται από το μέγεθός του, τη δύναμή του ή το πέρασμα του χρόνου. Αυτό δεν είναι μόνο ένα ζήτημα που αφορά την Κύπρο. Αφορά την αξιοπιστία του ίδιου του διεθνούς συστήματος. Αν ζητάμε από τα κράτη να πιστεύουν στην πολυμέρεια, αν περιμένουμε από αυτά να συμβάλλουν ενεργά σε αυτή, τότε πρέπει να μπορούν να Πιστεύουν ότι οι αρχές και οι αποφάσεις των θεσμών μας θα τηρούνται χωρίς εξαίρεση. Αυτή η συνέπεια έχει σημασία, ιδιαίτερα για τα κράτη των οποίων η ασφάλεια βασίζεται στην προστασία που παρέχει το διεθνές δίκαιο και όχι στην ισορροπία δυνάμεων. Παραμένω πλήρως προσηλωμένος στην επίτευξη μιας συνολικής λύσης. Είμαι έτοιμος για την επανέναρξη διαπραγματεύσεων από το σημείο όπου είχαν διακοπεί το 2017, αξιοποιώντας το ουσιαστικό έργο που έχει ήδη επιτελεστεί, εντός του συμφωνημένου πλαισίου των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Η κοινή βάση υπάρχει: τα σχετικά ψηφίσματα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, το διεθνές δίκαιο, καθώς και το δίκαιο, οι αξίες και οι αρχές της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. Αυτό που απαιτείται τώρα είναι πολιτική βούληση από όλα τα μέρη. Μια ειλικρινής προθυμία να επιστρέψουμε σε ουσιαστικές διαπραγματεύσεις. Να εμπλακούμε σοβαρά. Να οικοδομήσουμε πάνω στο έργο που έχει ήδη επιτευχθεί. ΚΑΙ να καταλήξουμε σε μια λύση που θα επανενώσει τη χώρα μας και τον λαό μας. Μια λύση που θα επιτρέπει στους Ελληνοκύπριους, στους Τουρκοκύπριους, στους Μαρωνίτες, στους Αρμένιους και στους Λατίνους να ζουν μαζί με Ειρήνη, Ασφάλεια και Ευημερία. Από την πλευρά μου, επιτρέψτε μου να το επαναλάβω, δηλώνω απόλυτα δεσμευμένος. «Η διχοτόμηση δεν θα γίνει αποδεκτή. Ποτέ» Διότι η διχοτόμηση δεν θα γίνει αποδεκτή. ΚΑΙ καλώ τον Πρόεδρο Ερντογάν να επιτρέψει ουσιαστικές διαπραγματεύσεις εντός του πλαισίου που έχει συμφωνηθεί από τον ΟΗΕ. Εξοχότατοι, «Για χώρες όπως η Κύπρος, η απάντηση είναι οι συνεργασίες» Αναφέρθηκα αρκετές φορές στο ότι η Αλλαγή είναι αναπόφευκτη. Όμως οι Επιλογές που κάνουμε ως απάντηση στην Αλλαγή, είναι δικές μας. Για χώρες όπως η Κύπρος, η απάντηση πρέπει να είναι οι στοχευμένες συνεργασίες. Συνεργασίες που αποδίδουν όταν χρειάζεται. Που δημιουργούνται από την πεποίθηση ότι, σε καιρούς ανάγκης, πρέπει να ενεργούμε από κοινού. Αυτή είναι η επιλογή που πρέπει να κάνουμε. Μπορούμε να αφήσουμε τις διαφορές μας να αποδυναμώσουν τους θεσμούς που οικοδομήσαμε μαζί. Ή μπορούμε να τους ενισχύσουμε. Μπορούμε να αφήσουμε τις διαφορές ισχύος να καθορίσουν ποια φωνή έχει σημασία. Ή μπορούμε να επαναβεβαιώσουμε τις ιδρυτικές αρχές αυτού του Οργανισμού. Για την Κύπρο, δεν υπάρχει τέτοιο δίλημμα: Πιστεύουμε σε έναν Οργανισμό Ηνωμένων Εθνών που προστατεύει τις αρχές του Χάρτη του και έχει τη δυνατότητα να ενεργεί σύμφωνα με αυτές. Πιστεύουμε σε ένα πολυμερές σύστημα στο οποίο κάθε κράτος έχει τόσο δικαιώματα όσο και ευθύνες. ΚΑΙ πιστεύουμε ότι τα μικρά κράτη έχουν να διαδραματίσουν έναν ιδιαίτερο ρόλο: ΟΧΙ στο περιθώριο των διεθνών υποθέσεων, αλλά ως ενεργοί συμμετέχοντες στη διαμόρφωση του κοινού μας μέλλοντος. «Τα μικρά κράτη έχουν ιδιαίτερο ρόλο» Για την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, αυτό σημαίνει να υπερασπιζόμαστε τις αρχές στις οποίες στηριζόμαστε, να συνεισφέρουμε στους θεσμούς στους οποίους πιστεύουμε, να οικοδομούμε εταιρικές σχέσεις για το κοινό καλό, να αναλαμβάνουμε πρωτοβουλίες για τη δημιουργία χρήσιμων συνεργειών και να ενεργούμε υπεύθυνα όπου μπορούμε να κάνουμε τη διαφορά. Παρά τις προκλήσεις λόγω της τουρκικής κατοχής, παραμένουμε ανθεκτικοί και ακλόνητοι στην πίστη μας στο Πολυμερές σύστημα. Διότι, τελικά, η δύναμη της πολυμέρειας μετριέται από το πόσο κάθε κράτος μέλος έχει την πεποίθηση ότι η δική του φωνή έχει σημασία, τα δικά του δικαιώματα προστατεύονται και η δική του συνεισφορά έχει αξία. Έτσι αποκαθιστούμε την Εμπιστοσύνη. Έτσι διαχειριζόμαστε την αλλαγή. Και έτσι οικοδομούμε έναν Οργανισμό Ηνωμένων Εθνών που πραγματικά παράγει αποτελέσματα για όλους.
