Ένα κομμάτι της μεσαιωνικής ιστορίας της Αγγλίας ήρθε ξανά στο φως, όταν αρχαιολόγοι εντόπισαν τμήμα του Κάστρου του Τσέστερ, ηλικίας περίπου 800 ετών, κρυμμένο κάτω από το σημερινό δικαστήριο της πόλης. Η ανακάλυψη έγινε σχεδόν τυχαία, όταν ο αρχαιολόγος του Πανεπιστημίου του Τσέστερ, Στιούαρτ Έινσγουορθ, εξερευνούσε έναν σκοτεινό διάδρομο κάτω από το Crown Court του Τσέστερ, χρησιμοποιώντας ως μοναδική πηγή φωτισμού το κινητό του τηλέφωνο. Όπως περιέγραψε ο ίδιος, το φως αποκάλυψε έναν μεγάλο τοίχο που διέφερε από τις υπόλοιπες κατασκευές. Ο τοίχος είχε διαφορετική μορφολογία, σχημάτιζε ορθή γωνία και συνέχιζε σε ένα στενό πέρασμα που χανόταν στο σκοτάδι.Οι πρώτες παρατηρήσεις οδήγησαν τους ερευνητές στη σύγκριση του ευρήματος με τα σωζόμενα τμήματα του νορμανδικού Κάστρου του Τσέστερ. Οι αναλύσεις έδειξαν ότι ο τοίχος δεν αποτελούσε μέρος των νεότερων κατασκευών του 18ου αιώνα, όταν ο αρχιτέκτονας Τόμας Χάρισον δημιούργησε το συγκρότημα φυλακών και δικαστηρίων, αλλά ανήκε στις αρχικές μεσαιωνικές οχυρώσεις. Ο τοίχος, ύψους σχεδόν τριών μέτρων, δείχνει ότι σημαντικά τμήματα του κάστρου δεν καταστράφηκαν, αλλά ενσωματώθηκαν στις μεταγενέστερες κατασκευές που δημιουργήθηκαν στην περιοχή. Οι ειδικοί εκτιμούν ότι, πιθανότατα υπήρχε ανασυρόμενη γέφυρα, η οποία μπορούσε να ανυψωθεί σε περίπτωση επίθεσης, εμποδίζοντας την πρόσβαση των εχθρών στο φρούριο.
