Σε ανάρτησή του, ο κ. Αιμιλιανίδης αναφέρει ότι η συζήτηση τού θύμισε την έντονη αντιπαράθεση που είχε προηγηθεί στην Ελλάδα πριν από περίπου 25 χρόνια για την κατάργηση της αναγραφής του θρησκεύματος στις ταυτότητες, σημειώνοντας ότι η θέση του παραμένει αμετάβλητη. Όπως εξηγεί, η ταυτότητα αποτελεί δημόσιο έγγραφο που εκδίδεται από το κράτος αποκλειστικά για την απόδειξη της ταυτότητας ενός προσώπου και συνιστά άσκηση κρατικής εξουσίας. Κατά συνέπεια, υποστηρίζει ότι το κράτος θα πρέπει να απαιτεί από τον πολίτη τη δημοσιοποίηση μόνο των απολύτως αναγκαίων προσωπικών στοιχείων, περιορίζοντας στο ελάχιστο τις πληροφορίες που υποχρεωτικά αποκαλύπτονται. Ο ίδιος διαχωρίζει, επίσης, την έννοια της κρατικής ταυτότητας από τον προσωπικό αυτοπροσδιορισμό. Όπως αναφέρει, στοιχεία όπως οι γονείς, τα παιδιά, το θρήσκευμα, η πολιτική τοποθέτηση, η ιδεολογία ή ο σεξουαλικός προσανατολισμός αποτελούν ζητήματα προσωπικής ταυτότητας και ελεύθερης έκφρασης του κάθε ανθρώπου και δεν σχετίζονται με τον σκοπό ενός κρατικού εγγράφου αναγνώρισης. «Η ταυτότητα δεν είναι έγγραφο αυτοπροσδιορισμού, αλλά ετεροπροσδιορισμού», σημειώνει χαρακτηριστικά, προσθέτοντας ότι ο ρόλος της δεν είναι να αποτυπώνει όσα ο ίδιος ο πολίτης θεωρεί σημαντικά για την προσωπική του ταυτότητα, αλλά να εξυπηρετεί αποκλειστικά τις ανάγκες αναγνώρισης από το κράτος. Ο κ. Αιμιλιανίδης εκφράζει ακόμη την αντίθεσή του στην προαιρετική αναγραφή πρόσθετων προσωπικών στοιχείων στις ταυτότητες. Υποστηρίζει ότι μια τέτοια πρακτική θα μπορούσε να οδηγήσει σε δυσμενείς διακρίσεις εις βάρος όσων επιλέγουν να μην αποκαλύπτουν συγκεκριμένες πληροφορίες, ενώ, όπως επισημαίνει, θα αναιρούσε και τη βασική φιλοσοφία ενός κρατικού εγγράφου ταυτοποίησης, μετατρέποντάς το σε μέσο προσωπικής δήλωσης αντί για εργαλείο αναγνώρισης.
