Η σύνοδος αυτή που θα διοργανωθεί στο Μόντρεαλ θα είναι μια ευκαιρία για Ευρωπαίους και Καναδούς να υλοποιήσουν τις προθέσεις τους για προσέγγιση, μετά την πρόταση της προέδρου της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής Ούρσουλα φον ντερ Λάιεν, η οποία είχε προτείνει να γίνει ο Καναδάς το πρώτο "συνδεδεμένο μέλος" της ΕΕ.
