Διάταγμα τριήμερης κράτησης εξέδωσε το Επαρχιακό Δικαστήριο Αμμοχώστου εναντίον 42χρονου, ο οποίος συνελήφθη από το ΤΑΕ Αμμοχώστου για δύο υποθέσεις διάρρηξης και κλοπής που διαπράχθηκαν τον Ιανουάριο του 2026 σε Πρωταρά και Αγία Νάπα. Σε ανακοίνωση ο Κλάδος Επικοινωνίας της Αστυνομίας αναφέρει ότι «στο πλαίσιο διερεύνησης υποθέσεων διάρρηξης και κλοπής ποσότητας χαλκού και ειδών υγιεινής από ξενοδοχείο στον Πρωταρά, καθώς επίσης και παραβίασης πέντε εμπορευματοκιβωτίων από ανεγειρόμενη οικοδομή στην Αγία Νάπα, και κλοπής μεγάλου αριθμού εργαλείων, καλωδίων καθώς και ενός αυτοκινήτου, οι οποίες διαπράχθηκαν κατά τον Ιανουάριο του 2026, μέλη του ΤΑΕ Αμμοχώστου, προχώρησαν χθες στη σύλληψη 42χρονου, στη βάση δικαστικού εντάλματος». Η θεσμική κατοχύρωση της Παγκύπριας Ομοσπονδίας Φοιτητικών Ενώσεων (ΠΟΦΕΝ), η φοιτητική χορηγία, η στέγαση και η ουσιαστική συμμετοχή των νέων στη διαμόρφωση πολιτικών βρέθηκαν στο επίκεντρο του 51ου Παγκύπριου Συνεδρίου της Ομοσπονδίας, που πραγματοποιήθηκε το Σάββατο, στην παρουσία της Υπουργού Παιδείας, Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας Αθηνάς Μιχαηλίδου, εκ μέρους του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας, και της Προέδρου της Βουλής Αννίτας Δημητρίου. Το Συνέδριο πραγματοποιήθηκε στο αμφιθέατρο της Παγκύπριας Οργάνωσης Ελλήνων Δασκάλων (ΠΟΕΔ), στη Λευκωσία. Η κ. Μιχαηλίδου ανέφερε ότι η Κυβέρνηση αντιμετωπίζει τη νέα γενιά ως ισότιμο συνομιλητή και συνδιαμορφωτή των αποφάσεων που την αφορούν, σημειώνοντας ότι η παρουσία της στο Συνέδριο υπογραμμίζει τη βαρύτητα που αποδίδεται στα ζητήματα της νεολαίας. Πρόσθεσε ότι η ΠΟΦΕΝ υπήρξε και παραμένει πρωτοστάτης στη διεκδίκηση των αιτημάτων των φοιτητών και θεσμικός συνομιλητής στη διαμόρφωση της εκπαιδευτικής πολιτικής. Αναφερόμενη στις πολιτικές για την ανώτερη εκπαίδευση, είπε ότι στόχος είναι μια ισχυρή, προσβάσιμη και ποιοτική πανεπιστημιακή παιδεία και η ανάδειξη της Κύπρου σε περιφερειακό και διεθνές κέντρο εκπαίδευσης, έρευνας και καινοτομίας. Σημείωσε ότι η τροποποίηση του νομοθετικού πλαισίου για την προσφορά ξενόγλωσσων προπτυχιακών προγραμμάτων από τα δημόσια πανεπιστήμια αποτελεί σημαντική τομή, ενώ αναφέρθηκε στη διασφάλιση της ποιότητας και στη σύνδεση των προγραμμάτων σπουδών με την αγορά εργασίας. Η Υπουργός αναγνώρισε παράλληλα ότι το κόστος σπουδών, η στέγαση και η φοιτητική μέριμνα αποτελούν σοβαρά ζητήματα, συνδεδεμένα με την ισότητα των ευκαιριών. Ανέφερε ότι συνεχίζεται η προσπάθεια αναβάθμισης της φοιτητικής χορηγίας και των επιδομάτων με επικαιροποιημένα κριτήρια, προσθέτοντας ότι το Υπουργείο θα ενισχύσει τη συνεργασία του με τη νέα ηγεσία της ΠΟΦΕΝ. Η Πρόεδρος της Βουλής χαρακτήρισε το Συνέδριο σημαντικό σταθμό για το οργανωμένο φοιτητικό κίνημα και αναφέρθηκε στην πρωτοβουλία για τη θεσμοθέτηση του νομοθετικού πλαισίου που διέπει τη σύσταση και λειτουργία της ΠΟΦΕΝ. Όπως είπε, η ψήφιση της πρότασης νόμου αποτελεί θεσμική αναγνώριση της διαχρονικής προσφοράς της Ομοσπονδίας και αποτέλεσμα συλλογικής προσπάθειας της Βουλής και των πολιτικών δυνάμεων. Με το νέο νομοθετικό πλαίσιο, πρόσθεσε, η ΠΟΦΕΝ αποκτά νομική προσωπικότητα, οικονομική και λειτουργική αυτοτέλεια και καθίσταται θεσμικός συνομιλητής της Πολιτείας. Υπογράμμισε ακόμη ότι η φοιτητική φωνή γίνεται ισχυρότερη όταν επενδύει στη συνεργασία και όχι στην τοξικότητα. Η κ. Δημητρίου είπε επίσης ότι η φοιτητική χορηγία πρέπει να αυξηθεί ουσιαστικά, καθώς παραμένει περίπου στο ίδιο επίπεδο εδώ και δέκα ή δώδεκα χρόνια, ενώ το κόστος ζωής, η ακρίβεια και η στέγαση επιβαρύνουν τους φοιτητές και τις οικογένειές τους. Αναφέρθηκε, επίσης, στο δικαίωμα της νέας γενιάς να ζήσει σε επανενωμένη πατρίδα και στην ανάγκη επανέναρξης των διαπραγματεύσεων. Εκ μέρους της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Παιδείας, ο Βουλευτής ΔΗΣΥ Πρόδρομος Αλαμπρίτης χαρακτήρισε σημαντική τη θεσμοθέτηση της ΠΟΦΕΝ, σημειώνοντας ότι η Ομοσπονδία αποτελεί ουσιαστικό συνεργάτη της Πολιτείας, της Βουλής και της Επιτροπής Παιδείας για τη βελτίωση της ανώτερης εκπαίδευσης και της φοιτητικής ζωής. Αναφέρθηκε στη φοιτητική χορηγία, στο αυξημένο κόστος ζωής και στέγασης, στις φοιτητικές εστίες στη Λεμεσό και στην Πανεπιστημιούπολη και στο υψηλό κόστος των αεροπορικών εισιτηρίων για όσους σπουδάζουν στο εξωτερικό. Τόνισε ότι χρειάζεται περαιτέρω στήριξη των φοιτητών και ενίσχυση της συνδεσιμότητας με βασικούς φοιτητικούς προορισμούς. Ο Πρόεδρος της ΠΟΦΕΝ Κωνσταντίνος Καρσεράς ανέφερε ότι στις 2 Απριλίου 2026 καλύφθηκε ένα θεσμικό κενό δεκαετιών, με την ψήφιση της νομοθεσίας που έδωσε στην Ομοσπονδία πλήρη νομική και θεσμική υπόσταση. Σημείωσε ότι η ΠΟΦΕΝ αναγνωρίστηκε ως νόμιμος εταίρος του κράτους για τα ζητήματα των φοιτητών, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι η κατάκτηση αυτή αποτελεί αποτέλεσμα συλλογικής προσπάθειας. Αναφερόμενος στον απολογισμό της θητείας 2025-2026, είπε ότι η ΠΟΦΕΝ παρενέβη όταν περισσότερες από 10.000 αιτήσεις κρατικής φοιτητικής μέριμνας παρέμεναν σε εκκρεμότητα, καθώς και για τα επιδόματα πρακτικής άσκησης, τις υποτροφίες και τη στέγαση, ενώ συμμετείχε σε κοινοβουλευτικές επιτροπές και θεσμικά σώματα. Πρόσθεσε ότι η απερχόμενη ηγεσία παραδίδει μια Ομοσπονδία θεσμικά κατοχυρωμένη, περισσότερο οργανωμένη και εξωστρεφή.
