Νεκροί μέσα σε όχημα σε γκαράζ στον Πειραιά εντοπίστηκαν το πρωί της Τρίτης (14/7) ένας 28χρονος και μία 24χρονη γυναίκα.Τα δύο νεαρά άτομα, που εκτιμάται πως είναι ζευγάρι, εντοπίστηκαν χωρίς τις αισθήσεις τους. Σύμφωνα με τις τελευταίες πληροφορίες, οι αρχές έχουν αποκλείσει το ενδεχόμενο εγκληματικής ενέργειας, καθώς το ζευγάρι δεν έφερε εμφανή τραύματα. Οι έρευνες στρέφονται πλέον στο ενδεχόμενο ο θάνατός τους να προκλήθηκε από αναθυμιάσεις. Το όχημα φέρεται να βρισκόταν σε λειτουργία μέσα στον κλειστό χώρο του γκαράζ, με τον κινητήρα αναμμένο και τον κλιματισμό σε λειτουργία. Οι αρχές εξετάζουν το σενάριο η συσσώρευση μονοξειδίου του άνθρακα να προκάλεσε ασφυξία στους δύο νέους. Σαν σήμερα, πριν από 52 χρόνια, το πρωί της 15ης Ιουλίου 1974, η Χούντα των Αθηνών και οι εγκάθετοί τους στην Κύπρο, διενήργησαν πραξικόπημα ενάντια στον εκλελεγμένο Πρόεδρο της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, Αρχιεπίσκοπο Μακάριο Γ’. Πρωταρχικός στόχος του πραξικοπήματος ήταν η απομάκρυνση του Αρχιεπισκόπου Μακαρίου Γ΄ από την εξουσία, αφού για την Χούντα αποτελούσε εμπόδιο στα σχέδια της για την Κύπρο. Η βίαιη ανατροπή του Αρχιεπισκόπου Μακαρίου δεν αποτέλεσε ένα ξαφνικό και απρόβλεπτο γεγονός. Αντίθετα, υπήρξε το επιστέγασμα μιας μακροχρόνιας συνωμοτικής πορείας, η οποία κατευθυνόταν από συγκεκριμένα κέντρα εξουσίας. Το πόρισμα για τον Φάκελο της Κύπρου αναφέρει: "Τα τραγικά γεγονότα του Ιούλη του 1974 δεν έπεσαν «ως κεραυνός εν αιθρία», ούτε αποτέλεσαν τον πρώτο κρίκο στη μεγάλη αλυσίδα των όσων συνθέτουν την Κυπριακή τραγωδία". "Χρόνια πριν από τη συντέλεση των γεγονότων του Ιούλη του ’74, διάφοροι ένστολοι και μη, εδώ και στην Κύπρο, επηρεασμένοι από την αντίληψη, που μεθοδικά καλλιεργούσαν διάφορες ξένες υπηρεσίες, των ΗΠΑ, του ΝΑΤΟ, κ.λπ., ότι ο Μακάριος εχθρευόταν φανατικά το ΝΑΤΟ και τις χώρες που συμμετείχαν σ’ αυτό και ότι ήταν ο Κάστρο της Μεσογείου, ύφαιναν, χωρίς συναίσθηση ευθύνης, στον αργαλειό της δικής τους ανώμαλης νοοτροπίας, την πρόκληση δολερής διχόνοιας ανάμεσα στο Ελληνοκυπριακό στοιχείο του πληθυσμού της νήσου, καθώς και στους Έλληνες αξιωματικούς που υπηρετούσαν στην Κυπριακή Εθνοφρουρά και στην ΕΛΔΥΚ και εμφυσούσαν, όσο και όπου μπορούσαν, ένα αληθινά θανάσιμο μίσος κατά του νόμιμα εκλεγμένου Προέδρου της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας Αρχιεπισκόπου Μακαρίου" αναφέρεται στον "Φάκελο Κύπρου, Τα πορίσματα της Εξεταστικής Επιτροπής της Βουλής των Ελλήνων και της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων". Οι πρώτες συστηματικές ενέργειες προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση εντοπίζονται ήδη από το 1965. Στη συνέχεια, με την επιβολή του δικτατορικού καθεστώτος στην Ελλάδα, η υπονομευτική αυτή δραστηριότητα απέκτησε ένα πιο επιθετικό χαρακτήρα, οδηγώντας, υπό την καθοδήγηση της Χούντας, στην οργάνωση σχεδίων για τη δολοφονία του Μακαρίου αλλά και για την εκτέλεση πραξικοπήματος. Ένταση επικρατούσε για καιρό στις σχέσεις της κυβέρνησης Μακαρίου με την χουντική κυβέρνηση των συνταγματαρχών στην Ελλάδα. Το πραξικόπημα της Χούντας των συνταγματαρχών τον Απρίλιο του 1967 στην Ελλάδα, τα αιματηρά γεγονότα στον τουρκοκυπριακό θύλακα της Κοφίνου τον Νοέμβριο του 1967 και στη συνέχεια η αποχώρηση της Ελληνικής Μεραρχίας από την Κύπρο, είχαν σαν αποτέλεσμα η ένταση μεταξύ κυπριακής και ελληνικής κυβέρνησης να ενισχύεται. Την 1η Ιουλίου το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο της Κυβέρνησης Μακαρίου είχε αποφασίσει τη μείωση της στρατιωτικής θητείας στην Εθνική Φρουρά σε 14 μήνες (από τους 18 που είχαν οριστεί το 1964, με τον νόμο για την ίδρυση της Ε.Φ.), καθώς και τη μείωση του αριθμού των Ελλήνων αξιωματικών της Εθνικής Φρουράς. Στις 2 Ιουλίου 1974, με επιστολή του προς τον Έλληνα στρατηγό, Φαίδωνα Γκιζίκη, ο Μακάριος κατηγόρησε την ελληνική κυβέρνηση για ανάμιξη στις εναντίον του συνωμοσίες και στήριξη της ΕΟΚΑ Β’ και αξίωνε να ανακληθούν στην Ελλάδα 650 Έλληνες αξιωματικοί, που υπηρετούσαν στην Εθνική Φρουρά. Η Εθνική Φρουρά, που από το 1964 αποτέλεσε την επίσημη στρατιωτική δύναμη της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, μετά την αποχώρηση των Τουρκοκυπρίων από τις στρατιωτικές δυνάμεις της χώρας το 1963, στελεχώθηκε από αξιωματικούς του ελληνικού στρατού, οι οποίοι μαζί με Κύπριους συναδέλφους τους και εθελοντές ανέλαβαν την οργάνωση και την εκπαίδευση του προσωπικού της. Για τον σκοπό αυτό, μεταφέρθηκε στην Κύπρο η Ελληνική Μεραρχία και δημιουργήθηκε η Ανώτατη Στρατιωτική Διοίκηση Άμυνας Κύπρου (ΑΣΔΑΚ), την αρχηγία της οποίας ανέλαβε αρχικά ο Γεώργιος Γρίβας, ο οποίος παραιτήθηκε από την αρχηγία της ΑΣΔΑΚ το 1967 αλλά επέστρεψε στην Κύπρο το 1971, για να ηγηθεί της ΕΟΚΑ Β’, οργάνωσης που αξίωνε να συνεχίσει το έργο της ΕΟΚΑ. Σύνθημα της ΕΟΚΑ Β’ ήταν η ένωση της Κύπρου με την Ελλάδα, το οποίο έβρισκε απήχηση σε μία μερίδα της ελληνοκυπριακής κοινότητας του νησιού, την οποία μεθοδικά και συστηματικά η ελληνική χουντική κυβέρνηση έστρεφε εναντίον της πολιτικής που ακολουθούσε ο Μακάριος. Έντονα ακουγόταν η πιθανότητα πραξικοπήματος ιδιαίτερα μετά την απόπειρα δολοφονίας του Μακαρίου το 1970 και η Χούντα πραγματοποιούσε παρασκηνιακές διεργασίες για την προετοιμασία του πραξικοπήματος εβδομάδες πριν την εκδήλωσή του. Στις 14 του Ιούλη ο Μακάριος βρισκόταν στην εξοχική προεδρική κατοικία στο Τρόοδος. Εν τω μεταξύ, στην Ελλάδα η Χούντα πραγματοποιούσε σύσκεψη των αρχηγών των ενόπλων δυνάμεων, όπου αποφασίστηκαν οριστικά οι τελευταίες λεπτομέρειες για την εκδήλωση της επίθεσης κυρίως κατά του Προεδρικού Μεγάρου. Το βράδυ της 14ης Ιουλίου και σύμφωνα με μαρτυρίες, χουντικοί αξιωματικοί σε διάφορα στρατόπεδα της Εθνικής Φρουράς έθεσαν τις μονάδες τους σε κρυφή επιφυλακή, ενώ σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις απομόνωσαν ή περιόρισαν κληρωτούς στρατιώτες για τους οποίους είχαν υποψίες ότι θα προέβαλλαν αντίσταση. Επιστρέφοντας στη Λευκωσία νωρίς το πρωί της 15ης Ιουλίου, καθ’ οδόν προς το Προεδρικό, ο Μακάριος πέρασε μπροστά από το στρατόπεδο όπου ήδη ήταν σε εξέλιξη οι προετοιμασίες για το πραξικόπημα. Δεν έγινε όμως κάτι αντιληπτό από την ακολουθία του. Το πρωί της 15ης Ιουλίου, τμήματα της Εθνικής Φρουράς, με τον εξοπλισμό που διέθεσε για τη διεξαγωγή του πραξικοπήματος η Χούντα, υπό τις εντολές του επιτελάρχη της Ε.Φ., Ταξίαρχου Μιχαήλ Γεωργίτση, έλαβαν οδηγίες να επιτεθούν στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο. Το πραξικόπημα εκδηλώνεται με το σύνθημα «ο Αλέξανδρος εισήλθε εις το νοσοκομείο». Γεωργίτσης προς το Γραφείο του Αρχηγού Ενόπλων Δυνάμεων. Μόλις τρία λεπτά αργότερα, στις 8:20 π.μ., ξεκίνησε η συντονισμένη έφοδος των αρμάτων μάχης, των τεθωρακισμένων οχημάτων και των δυνάμεων καταδρομών κατά του Προεδρικού Μεγάρου, πλήττοντας αρχικά την είσοδο και έπειτα την έξοδο της ανατολικής πλευράς, επί της λεωφόρου Δημοσθένη Σεβέρη. Στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο, ο Μακάριος υποδεχόταν ομάδα παιδιών από την ελληνική παροικία της Αιγύπτου. Στην επίθεση, πέρα από δυνάμεις της Εθνικής Φρουράς, συμμετείχαν και ένοπλοι άντρες της ΕΟΚΑ Β’. Εν μέσω εκρήξεων και πυροβολισμών, ο Μακάριος με τη συνοδεία δύο ανδρών της φρουράς του, δραπέτευσε από τη δυτική πλευρά του κτηρίου, που είχε μείνει αφύλαχτη, βγήκε από τον κήπο του Μεγάρου προς την κοίτη του παρακείμενου ρέματος και απομακρύνθηκε, οδεύοντας προς το μοναστήρι του Κύκκου, όπου και βρήκε καταφύγιο. Η επιχείρηση κατάληψης του Προεδρικού Μεγάρου διήρκεσε περίπου μιάμιση ώρα, αφήνοντας πίσω της νεκρούς. Όμως, η επίθεση στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο δεν ήταν η μόνη. Διενεργήθηκαν και άλλες επιθέσεις, σε πόλεις και πολλά χωριά της Κύπρου για πάταξη της αντίστασης. Εκτυλίσσονταν παράλληλες επιθέσεις σε άλλα στρατηγικά σημεία της Λευκωσίας, όπως το Αρχηγείο της Αστυνομίας, το στρατόπεδο του Εφεδρικού Σώματος, οι εγκαταστάσεις του Ραδιοφωνικού Ιδρύματος Κύπρου και το Διεθνές Αεροδρόμιο της πόλης αλλά και στην Αρχιεπισκοπή. Τεθωρακισμένα και ένοπλοι άντρες βρέθηκαν στους δρόμους, ελέγχοντας νευραλγικά σημεία, ενώ δόθηκαν οδηγίες για κατ’ οίκον περιορισμό των πολιτών. Αντίσταση στους πραξικοπηματίες πρόβαλαν ομάδες εφέδρων, που προετοιμάζονταν από καιρό για μία τέτοια εξέλιξη, ωστόσο δεν ήταν αρκετοί για να σταματήσουν την δράση των πραξικοπηματιών. Σθεναρή αντίσταση πρόβαλε η Αρχιεπισκοπή που άντεξε περισσότερο από κάθε άλλο στόχο. Όμως, το κτήριο της Αρχιεπισκοπής τυλίχθηκε στις φλόγες, ενώ σοβαρές ζημιές υπέστησαν εικόνες και πίνακες που βρίσκονταν στο εσωτερικό. Το κτήριο της Αρχιεπισκοπής παραδόθηκε στους πραξικοπηματίες το απόγευμα της ίδιας ημέρας. Ένας από τους πρώτους στόχους των πραξικοπηματίων ήταν και το κτήριο του Ραδιοφωνικού Ιδρύματος Κύπρου. Το κατέλαβαν και μετέδιδαν συνεχώς: «Σήμερον την πρωίαν επενέβη η Εθνική Φρουρά διά να σταματήση τον αδελφοκτόνον πόλεμον μεταξύ των Ελλήνων. Η Εθνική Φρουρά είναι την στιγμήν αυτήν κυρία της καταστάσεως. Ο Μακάριος είναι νεκρός». Την ίδια ώρα, οι πραξικοπηματίες γνωστοποιούσαν και τα ονόματα των μελών της «κυβέρνησης σωτηρίας», όπως ονομάστηκε η πραξικοπηματική λεγόμενη κυβέρνηση που διόρισαν υπό τον Νίκο Σαμψών, μία αμφιλεγόμενη προσωπικότητα, ο οποίος αποτέλεσε την έσχατη λύση, μετά την άρνηση τριών δικαστικών αλλά και του αείμνηστου Γλαύκου Κληρίδη να αναλάβουν την προεδρία. Ο Μακάριος εν τω μεταξύ, είχε φθάσει στην Πάφο και απηύθυνε διάγγελμα από τον Ελεύθερο Ραδιοφωνικό Σταθμό Πάφου λέγοντας: «Ελληνικέ Κυπριακέ Λαέ! Γνώριμη είναι η φωνή που ακούεις. Γνωρίζεις ποιος σου ομιλεί. Είμαι ο Μακάριος. Είμαι εκείνος τον οποίο συ εξέλεξες διά να είναι ο ηγέτης σου. Δεν είμαι νεκρός. Είμαι ζωντανός. Και είμαι μαζί σου, συναγωνιστής και σημαιοφόρος εις τον κοινόν αγώνα. Το πραξικόπημα της χούντας απέτυχε. Εγώ ήμουν ο στόχος της και εγώ, εφόσον ζω, η Χούντα εις την Κύπρον δεν θα περάση. Η Χούντα απεφάσισε να καταστρέψη την Κύπρο. Να την διχοτομήση. Αλλά δεν θα το κατορθώση. Πρόβαλε παντοιοτρόπως αντίστασιν εις την Χούντα. Μη φοβηθής. Ενταχθήτε όλοι εις τας νομίμους δυνάμεις του κράτους. Η Χούντα δεν πρέπει να περάση και δεν θα περάση. Νυν υπέρ πάντων ο αγών!» Με βρετανικό στρατιωτικό αεροσκάφος και μέσω Μάλτας ο Μακάριος μετέβη στο Λονδίνο, όπου στις 17 Ιουλίου, συναντήθηκε με τον Βρετανό πρωθυπουργό Χάρολντ Ουϊλσον και τον Υπουργό Εξωτερικών Τζέιμς Κάλαχαν. Οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες ζήτησαν την υποστήριξη της ανεξαρτησίας της Κύπρου και κάλεσαν όλα τα κράτη να πράξουν το ίδιο, την ίδια ώρα που ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών της χώρας Χένρι Κίσιγκερ απέρριψε πρόταση για υποστήριξη του ανατραπέντος καθεστώτος Μακαρίου! Μόλις πέντε μέρες μετά το πραξικόπημα, η Τουρκία, εκμεταλλευόμενη την κατάσταση και με πρόσχημα την ασφάλεια των Τουρκοκυπρίων, εισέβαλε στο νησί, επιβάλλοντας ντε φάκτο τη διχοτόμηση του και κατέχοντας μέχρι σήμερα το 37% του εδάφους, σπέρνοντας τον όλεθρο και την καταστροφή, κατά παράβαση θεμελιωδών κανόνων του διεθνούς δικαίου. Economic sentiment in Cyprus improved for the third consecutive month, rising marginally in June, on improved business and consumer confidence, according to the benchmark index compiled by the Economics Research Centre of the University of Cyprus.
