Την ανάγκη αλλαγής στρατηγικής στο Κυπριακό επανέλαβε ο Πρόεδρος του ΕΛΑΜ Χρίστος Χρίστου, μετά τη συνεδρία του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου. Αναφερόμενος στις εξελίξεις στη Νέα Υόρκη, υποστήριξε ότι, παρά την «καλή πρόθεση της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας» και τις προτάσεις του Προέδρου Χριστοδουλίδη, «η τουρκική αδιαλλαξία δεν επιτρέπει στην παρούσα φάση να είμαστε ιδιαίτερα αισιόδοξοι». «Δεν συμφωνούμε με τη ΔΔΟ» Ο Χρίστος Χρίστου επανέλαβε τη θέση του ΕΛΑΜ κατά της διζωνικής δικοινοτικής ομοσπονδίας. «Θεωρούμε ότι πρέπει το Εθνικό Συμβούλιο στο σύνολό του να αποφασίσει για μια νέα πορεία, για μια νέα στρατηγική», δήλωσε, ζητώντας νέα βάση επίλυσης του Κυπριακού, η οποία, όπως είπε, «θα δικαιώνει τον Κυπριακό Ελληνισμό» και θα διασφαλίζει τις επόμενες γενιές.
Με σαφή προσπάθεια να μεταφέρει τη συζήτηση από τις εσωκομματικές διαδικασίες στην πολιτική ουσία, ο πρώην πρόεδρος του Δημοκρατικού Συναγερμού, Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου, υπερασπίστηκε την απόφασή του να εξαγγείλει την υποψηφιότητά του για τις προεδρικές εκλογές του 2028, σε συνέντευξή του στο «Μεσημέρι και Κάτι». Απέφυγε, ωστόσο, να ξεκαθαρίσει αν θα ακολουθήσει ή όχι την καταστατική διαδικασία του ΔΗΣΥ, επιμένοντας ότι τα διαδικαστικά είναι θέμα που αφορά την ηγεσία του κόμματος. Ο κ. Νεοφύτου ξεκίνησε τη συζήτηση εξηγώντας ότι θέλει, όπως είπε, «με πολύ ειλικρίνεια» να παρουσιάσει το πολιτικό υπόβαθρο της απόφασής του. Αναφέρθηκε στην πολυετή σχέση του με τον ΔΗΣΥ, σημειώνοντας ότι γνωρίζει την παράταξη και τις διαδικασίες της όσο λίγοι, ενώ τόνισε ότι δεν έχει ούτε αποκλείσει ούτε προαποφασίσει τη στάση του σε σχέση με τις εσωκομματικές διαδικασίες. «Υπάρχει μόνο μια καθαρή πολιτική μου απόφαση. Κοιτάζοντας το αύριο. Δεν μπορούμε να κερδίσουμε το αύριο με σημαία του χτες», ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά, θέτοντας ως βασικούς άξονες της υποψηφιότητάς του το Κυπριακό και την οικονομία. Όπως είπε, η Κύπρος παραμένει μια «μοιρασμένη πατρίδα», με το αδιέξοδο να παγιώνεται και να «τσιμεντώνεται», ενώ την ίδια ώρα, κατά την εκτίμησή του, «το κράτος ευημερεί, οι πολίτες φτωχαίνουν». Ο ίδιος υποστήριξε ότι η απόφασή του δεν έχει σχέση με το πολιτικό χθες, αλλά με αυτό που εισπράττει από την κοινωνία. «Νιώθω και παίρνω τον παλμό της κοινωνίας και βλέπω μια διάθεση κάποιος να ηγηθεί», είπε, εκφράζοντας την ανάγκη να ανοίξει μια ευρύτερη πολιτική συζήτηση για τα μεγάλα ζητήματα του τόπου. Ο δημοσιογράφος Χρήστος Μιχάλαρος επισήμανε ότι, ενώ η ηγεσία του ΔΗΣΥ έχει ανακοινώσει διαδικασία για τις υποψηφιότητες, η απουσία σαφούς απάντησης από τον Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου ως προς το αν θα συμμετάσχει σε αυτή έχει μετατρέψει το διαδικαστικό σε μείζον πολιτικό ζήτημα. Ο κ. Νεοφύτου απάντησε ότι δεν τοποθετείται «στερνόμενος», αλλά «αυτόνομος», και ότι όταν οριστικοποιηθούν οι διαδικασίες θα τοποθετηθεί. «Διαλέξατε λάθος άνθρωπο να μιλάτε για διαδικασίες», είπε, υπενθυμίζοντας τη γνώση του για τη λειτουργία της παράταξης. Στην επισήμανση του δημοσιογράφου ότι η ημερομηνία για την υποβολή υποψηφιοτήτων έχει ήδη ανακοινωθεί, ο κ. Νεοφύτου επέμεινε ότι θα μιλήσει όταν οριστικοποιηθούν οι διαδικασίες. Ο Χρήστος Μιχάλαρος επέμεινε, από την πλευρά του, ότι η φράση του πρώην προέδρου του ΔΗΣΥ «δεν είμαι υποψήφιος για να είμαι υποψήφιος» ερμηνεύτηκε από πολλούς ως πρόθεση να προχωρήσει μέχρι τέλους, αφήνοντας όμως ανοιχτό και το ενδεχόμενο να αποχωρήσει αν κρίνει ότι η υποψηφιότητα δεν έχει πολιτικό νόημα. Ο Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου απάντησε ότι δίνει μάχες «για τα πιστεύω μου, για τις αρχές και τις αξίες μου» και επανέφερε τη βασική του ένσταση: την απουσία πολιτικής ατζέντας και ουσιαστικής πολιτικής συζήτησης. «Αρεσκόμαστε στα μικρά και διαδικαστικά παρακάμπτοντας την ουσία», ανέφερε. Ο δημοσιογράφος του επισήμανε ότι ο ίδιος προκάλεσε τη συγκεκριμένη συζήτηση, επειδή δεν έδωσε εξαρχής καθαρή απάντηση για τη διαδικασία. Ο κ. Νεοφύτου αντέτεινε ότι το ερώτημα είναι κατά πόσο αυτά απασχολούν την κοινωνία. «Η κοινωνία προβληματίζεται», είπε, θέτοντας στο επίκεντρο το ερώτημα αν η πατρίδα θα μπορέσει να απεγκλωβιστεί από τα σημερινά αδιέξοδα και αν οι νέοι θα παραμείνουν εγκλωβισμένοι σε αυτά. Στο σημείο αυτό ο πρώην πρόεδρος του ΔΗΣΥ πέρασε στην οικονομία, υποστηρίζοντας ότι οι νέοι με υψηλά προσόντα, μεταπτυχιακά και διδακτορικά δυσκολεύονται να βρουν δουλειά με μισθούς της τάξης των 1.000 και 1.200 ευρώ. Έκανε αναφορά και στις αυξήσεις των κρατικών αξιωματούχων, υποστηρίζοντας ότι, μόνο από την αύξηση της ΑΤΑ τα τελευταία χρόνια, το ποσό ανέρχεται περίπου στα 1.800 ευρώ, σημειώνοντας ότι πολλοί εργαζόμενοι αμείβονται με λιγότερα από την ίδια την αύξηση. Ο Χρήστος Μιχάλαρος διέκοψε, επισημαίνοντας ότι θέλει να φύγει από τη μέση το διαδικαστικό και να περάσει η συζήτηση στις προγραμματικές θέσεις. Έθεσε ευθέως το ζήτημα της «τριχοτόμησης» του ΔΗΣΥ και ρώτησε ποιοι επιχειρούν να την προκαλέσουν. Ο Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου παρέπεμψε στην ηγεσία του κόμματος, ενώ αρνήθηκε ότι αισθάνεται πως αφορά τον ίδιο ζήτημα διάσπασης ή τριχοτόμησης. Ακολούθησε ερώτηση για αναφορά του σε «προδοσία» και τη φράση ότι «ο προδομένος δεν προδίδει ποτέ». Ο δημοσιογράφος ζήτησε να μάθει ποιοι τον πρόδωσαν, επισημαίνοντας ότι ο ίδιος είχε δηλώσει πως δεν θέλει να ασχοληθεί με το χθες. Ο κ. Νεοφύτου εξήγησε ότι απαντούσε σε συγκεκριμένο ερώτημα για το αν θα γίνει ο ίδιος «προδότης της παράταξης» και ότι δεν θεωρεί πως χρειάζεται να δώσει συνέχεια. «Έχουμε μια ώριμη κοινωνία. Έζησε το παρελθόν. Έχει άποψη. Δεν έχω εμμονές κύριε Μιχάλη. Ούτε είμαι εγκλωβισμένος στο χθες», είπε. «Είμαι άνθρωπος που έχω οράματα για τον τόπο μου. Μεγάλα οράματα. Και ξέρω πολύ καλά ότι για να τα πετύχεις χρειάζεται να βαστάς τη σημαία του μέλλοντος και όχι τη σημαία του παρελθόντος», πρόσθεσε. Ο Χρήστος Μιχάλαρος έφερε στη συζήτηση την περίπτωση του Νίκου Χριστοδουλίδη, υπενθυμίζοντας ότι όταν ο τότε υπουργός Εξωτερικών ενδιαφέρθηκε ενεργά για την προεδρική υποψηφιότητα, ο Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου είχε ζητήσει να παραιτηθεί και να κατέλθει στις καταστατικές διαδικασίες του ΔΗΣΥ. Υπενθύμισε μάλιστα τη δημόσια τοποθέτηση «άμα είναι μάγκας και θέλει να το κάνει». Με δεδομένο ότι ο κ. Χριστοδουλίδης τελικά εξελέγη Πρόεδρος, ο δημοσιογράφος ρώτησε γιατί σήμερα μέρος της κοινωνίας θεωρεί ότι ο Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου πράττει κάτι αντίστοιχο με αυτό που τότε κατήγγειλε. Ο κ. Νεοφύτου απάντησε ότι τα συμπεράσματα ανήκουν στον δημοσιογράφο, ενώ ο Χρήστος Μιχάλαρος ζήτησε διευκρινίσεις, λέγοντας ότι θέλει να αποφευχθεί λανθασμένη εικόνα για τον Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου και υπενθυμίζοντας ότι κάποιοι τον κατηγορούν πως ενδιαφέρεται κυρίως για την «καρέκλα». Ο πρώην πρόεδρος του ΔΗΣΥ ξεκαθάρισε ότι δεν πρόκειται να συρθεί σε τοποθετήσεις επειδή τις ζητούν άλλοι, είτε αυτοί είναι δημοσιογράφοι, είτε πολιτικοί, είτε κόμματα. «Δεν σέρνομαι πίσω από άλλους», είπε χαρακτηριστικά. Στη συνέχεια ο δημοσιογράφος επέμεινε ότι μεγάλο μέρος της αντιπαράθεσης θα είχε αποφευχθεί αν ο κ. Νεοφύτου είχε απαντήσει εξαρχής στα συγκεκριμένα ερωτήματα. Ο ίδιος αρνήθηκε ότι υπάρχει καβγάς: «Δεν τσακώθηκα και δεν τσακώνομαι με κανέναν», ανέφερε, ζητώντας να προχωρήσει η συζήτηση στην πολιτική ουσία. Όταν η συζήτηση μεταφέρθηκε στην οικονομική κατάσταση της κοινωνίας, ο Χρήστος Μιχάλαρος ζήτησε από τον Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου να τοποθετηθεί για τη δική του οικονομική θέση, με βάση τη διάκριση που είχε κάνει ο ίδιος σε τρεις κατηγορίες: όσους δεν τα βγάζουν πέρα, όσους τα βγάζουν οριακά και όσους μπορούν να ανταποκριθούν στις υποχρεώσεις τους. «Είμαι στην τρίτη κατηγορία», απάντησε ο κ. Νεοφύτου, εξηγώντας ότι αυτό οφείλεται στον μισθό του ως βουλευτή, στις συντάξεις που λαμβάνει σήμερα και στην κληρονομιά από την οικογένειά του. Την ίδια ώρα, υποστήριξε ότι, σύμφωνα με επίσημα στατιστικά στοιχεία, περίπου το ένα τρίτο της κοινωνίας τα βγάζει πέρα, το ένα τρίτο δυσκολεύεται και ένα τρίτο δεν τα καταφέρνει, ό,τι και αν κάνει. Διευκρίνισε, μάλιστα, ότι δεν θεωρεί πως όλοι οι δημόσιοι υπάλληλοι ανήκουν στην κατηγορία εκείνων που τα βγάζουν πέρα, καθώς υπάρχει σημαντικό τμήμα της δημόσιας υπηρεσίας που αντιμετωπίζει οικονομικές δυσκολίες. Σε ερώτηση για τη μονιμότητα στο Δημόσιο, την αξιολόγηση και το ενδεχόμενο απομάκρυνσης υπαλλήλων, ο Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου διαχώρισε το ζήτημα της μονιμότητας από τη διόγκωση του κρατικού μισθολογίου. Υποστήριξε ότι η διόγκωση προέρχεται από «πολιτικές πελατειακές», αναφερόμενος στη διαχρονική πρακτική, όπως την περιέγραψε, πολιτικών που αυξάνουν το κρατικό μισθολόγιο για να διευρύνουν την εκλογική τους πελατεία. Κατά τον ίδιο, η πολιτική επιλογή θα έπρεπε να είναι πιο λελογισμένες αυξήσεις στο κρατικό μισθολόγιο και παράλληλη στήριξη των δύο άλλων κοινωνικών κατηγοριών, με προτεραιότητα στους νέους. Ο Χρήστος Μιχάλαρος τον ρώτησε αν έχει αλλάξει η πολιτική του προσέγγιση σε σχέση με την προηγούμενη προεδρική εκλογική αναμέτρηση, όταν παρουσιαζόταν ως υποψήφιος που έδινε έμφαση στη δημοσιονομική και οικονομική σταθερότητα. Ο κ. Νεοφύτου απάντησε με ερώτηση: «Τι αλλαγή υπάρχει στις θέσεις μου;» και απέρριψε το δίλημμα κεντροδεξιάς και κεντροαριστεράς ως «ψευτοδίλημμα». Όπως εξήγησε, τα προβλήματα των πολιτών δεν έχουν κομματικό χρώμα. Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που δυσκολεύονται ή δεν τα βγάζουν πέρα τόσο στον χώρο της κεντροδεξιάς όσο και στον χώρο της κεντροαριστεράς. «Γιατί διαχωρίζουμε τον λαό μας; Και κάτι πιο μεγάλο: θέλουμε επανένωση του τόπου μας», ανέφερε, υποστηρίζοντας ότι η επιδίωξη της επανένωσης δεν μπορεί να συμβαδίζει με τον κοινωνικό διαχωρισμό. «Τα προβλήματα του τόπου είναι κοινά. Δεν έχουν χρώμα», τόνισε, ενώ ο δημοσιογράφος τον ρώτησε με ποιους θα κυβερνήσει προκειμένου να εφαρμόσει τις πολιτικές που περιγράφει. Απαντώντας, ο Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου χρησιμοποίησε μια παραβολή από τη γεωργία. «Όταν πάρεις μια καμένη γη δεν μπορείς την επόμενη μέρα να βάλεις το περιβόλι. Χρειάζεται μια αγρανάπαυση. Ο δημοσιογράφος επέμεινε ότι τα προβλήματα αυτά είναι ήδη γνωστά και ζήτησε να περάσει η συζήτηση στο πώς ακριβώς θα εφαρμοστεί το πρόγραμμα που παρουσίασε ο Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου.
